I hate the line that gets trotted out about there being more pressing feminist matters to deal with.
For a start I can be involved with this and other issues like FGM as a friend of mine uses as an example.
Secondly, thinking of page three as a little, non issue just goes to show how indoctrinated we are by the media and society against seeing sexism and gender inequality as a big problem. Page three may seem small but getting rid of tits in a national, family newspaper, where they have no place and thus also removing the snide and derisive "news in brief" will be a massive victory for campaigners for gender equality.

I totally agree with this. I have signed the petition and follow nomorepage3 on twitter.

Great post littlewhitewolf. You always get told to worry about other things like FGM.

So yesterday I did, with One Billion Rising. But guess what, even saw comments about that saying it was ridiculous!

Some people are so dismissive. But campaigning DOES work

Yes i signed it i feel very strong about page 3 and think its totally inappropriate in this day and age to have it in a daily paper. It also sends out the wrong message that all women are available for men's plessure(not that all men thin this way, i'm referring to men who leer at women out of van windows and shout lewd comments. I just refer to these men as sun readers)

Going off the point a bit but still relevant i think, before Christmas i was in our local shopping centre and this woman was breastfeeding her baby, a security guard went up to her and said she couldn't feed there( she was covered with a muslin cloth and sitting down) yet it was totally ok for the stall next to him to be selling calendars of half naked women on them. I just thought how can a woman breeastfeeding be offensive and yet it's ok to not give a second thought about half naked airbrushed women.

ThePavlovianCat · 15/02/2013 09:23

I hope the woman told that security guard to go jump brummiegirl. It's stressful enough getting breast-feeding established and then feeling confident doing it in public without jerks like that.

Report
brummiegirl1 · 15/02/2013 09:37

I think she was embarrased as she stopped feeding and didn't say anything, her baby was only young so she was probably still gaining confidence infeeding. I wish now i had gone up to him and asked why he finds a woman discreetly feeding her babyinappropriate but not of women half dressed in sexual poses on calendars in full view of everyone. I know it wasn't page 3 but it is all part of the same thing IMO

Yep I signed it ages ago. I think it's brilliant. We really need to change the face of feminism, not all of us are man hating loonies.

I see getting rid of page 3 as a major step forward for the treatment of women in the media.

Which then will feed out for better treatment in society for women generally.

It's not about objecting to nudity. It's about trying to get a better deal for all women.

So while it's seems like a small thing, it's really not.

I signed it when it first came out. I hate page, it's horrible. I hate the idea that my sons could have the idea planted in their minds that its okay by virtue of it being in newspapers, therefore 'it must be okay' as they sell thousands right? Uurgghh. It almost mums word v's The Media that its not okay.

I don't buy the Sun but it is left in McDonalds, Dr's and dentist waiting rooms, read on the bus etc for anyone to see.

Not very eloquent but I know what I mean Grin

Very few feminists are "man hating loonies"... In fact, I would say that none of the hundreds of feminists I know and have met are "man hating loonies" - and those that are depicted as such in the media are usually woefully misrepresented.

We don't need to change the face of feminism, we need to change a society that thinks that campaigning for women's rights and equality makes one a "man hating loony", and that wanting to end blatant sexism and discrimination in a national newspaper makes one joyless and petty.

Boiledeggonlegs- what you said is exactly how i feel. I don't buy The Sun and neither does my husband but you don't have to buy it to see it. Your right it is everywhere.

Oh good, TheElephantIsADaintyBird! It's so bloody frustrating that there's so much negativity attached to feminism.

Has anyone else seen the front cover of today's Sun, which is the most revolting act of objectification I have seen. It sexualises Reeva Steenkamp and trivialises a brutal act of violence - the day after she was murdered. I don't think the Sun could sink any lower. Harmless fun? I don't think so. Shame on them.

I have signed particualrly after struggling and failing to explain to my 4 and 7 year old why there is a lady with here boobs out in a newspaper after the woman sat next to us in a cafe was reading the paper and that page fell open. Mmm let me see. Why was she there? Oh I know, we live in a sexist society where women are routinely objectified and judged on their looks. We therefore consider it perfectly normal for young woman to be standing with her boobs out in a 'family' newspaper.

the number of middle-class mothers on here who find themselves having to explain page three away to their children after sitting next to a Sun reader in a cafe. Staggering.

There sure is, a lot of people I meet are surprised if the fact I'm a feminist comes up in conversation, apparently I don't look like a feminist. What exactly are they meant to look like?

I saw the sun this morning, it's disgraceful. Poor young girl is laying dead in a morgue, they should have some respect.

Here's the Sun link. Murder of a model? What a great opportunity for us all to ogle her body. This is exactly what I'm talking about.

yes because all feminists are hairy, ugly, fat, man hating dykes and wear horrible clothes too and are thu way they are becuase men would not look at them twice

Feminism is such a dirty word but it the media who is still mainly controlled by men who are often misogynists that will feed this crap and so many follow

It's sad when I read on here over and over again feminists are making life harder for women, feminisim has done nothing for me, I am not a feminist because some have extreme views and so on

Report
ashesgirl · 15/02/2013 11:03

And objecting to page 3 what makes men laugh at feminists? Clearly no idea how many men have signed the petition.

I hate to rock the boat but ...

Whoever said men were horribly judgmental need only look at a magazine rack this week: OK magazine says "LOVE SPLIT KELLY BROOK GAINS 10lbs!" and shows her belly. Nuts' take is "KELLY BROOK:NOW EVEN BOOBIER!" You know what I think, God Bless lads mags.

Report
ashesgirl · 15/02/2013 11:11

The way gossip mags treat women is very much a part of the same problem.

I have never understood why anyone should object to seeing a pretty girl with bare breasts - especially if she is happy and well paid.

Report
ironhorse · 15/02/2013 12:41

im not signing it, its a pair of tits, removing them from one paper wont make the slightest difference to society - does anyone even look at them in the paper? do you think people buy the paper to look at a pair of tits? look at the shelves around the newspapers which have mags on them, theyre are loads of mags filled with woman with their tits out. one click of a mouse button and you can look at more tits than you would know what to do with.

look on any schoolchilds phone, there will be porn on it - if there isnt you either havent found it or they have deleted it. a friend who is a policeman gets at least a dozen complaints a week from parents/schools about inappropriate material in emails and on kids phones - Kids certainly dont buy or read the sun to see tits.

as for speaking about woman being exploited on page 3, please give me a break. these girls are there in all their glory witha smile like a cheshire cat getting a 6 figure salary - how is that exploitation?

ironhorse - I dont buy it, wouldnt even have it in the house. I dont care if page 3 girls are paid a million. I have to live in the crap world their actions help create.

I dont understand why some people cant see it is not a moral or a prude issue. It is a gender issue.

So - YES OF COURSE I HAVE SIGNED.

inwiththe - please thank your friends - I so admire their guts.
