Please sign in here if you do. I think people who use it should be shot.

OP posts:
Nighbynight · 16/12/2008 20:45

lol at Crimbo deccies. Is this some strange, yet-to-be-documented, unspoilt Home Counties dialect?

Habbibu · 16/12/2008 21:08

I sat in a theatre once, aged about 15, surrounded by Derek Hatton and some terrifyingly slimy sycophants. It was very disconcerting.

Threadworrm · 16/12/2008 21:21

Squiffy?

No.

Swedes · 16/12/2008 21:41

Threadworm - Don't you say squiffy, dear Thready? Please tell me you say squffy just a bit, darling?

Threadworrm · 16/12/2008 21:48

Or think Dennis Thatcher after too many tinctures.

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:00

"
It seems strangely anti-Judeo-Christian to make a fetish of the written word, notwithstanding 'In the beginning was the Word.'"

I've always thought that, Threadie. It always feels as though some French critical theorist from the Seventies has gone back and revised it.

I dunno. I'm going to put some shoes on Ebay.

Swedes · 16/12/2008 22:03

Do you photograph them on your feet, Onebat?

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:14

No.

They are dd's outgrown and ludicrously expensive shoes. I need to claw some of that investment back..

Swedes · 16/12/2008 22:19

Are they Pom D'Api shoes?

Threadworrm · 16/12/2008 22:20

" I know that logos is, like, totally more complex than that" (Pen)

I want to know now. Tell me about logos, anyone who knows. Really.

(Will be an intermittent poster though as am watching Chinatown. Have never seen it before. Is v. good. Love Polanski in his cameo. )

Crimboprocta · 16/12/2008 22:22

Well, sod all of you

Penthesileia · 16/12/2008 22:35

Hmmm - except the written word (as the word of God)_is central to Judaism (10 commandments, the Torah, etc.). And, as I said, logos is more complicated than that...

See here.

Would type more myself, but am lying in dark next to sleeping baby...

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:42

"from the root of the Greek verb lego"

So much in life comes down to Lego, doesn't it?

That's very interesting Penthesileia, thank you.

Threadworrm · 16/12/2008 22:42

Thank you very much. Will read link. Seems v interesting.

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:44

so just to be clear, could be Word, could be Order/Way? Could and is both simultaneously?

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:45

Yes, Swedes, I'm afraid they are.

Penthesileia · 16/12/2008 22:46

Indeed.

Swedes · 16/12/2008 22:47

Connected discourse is to Heraclitus as Mumsnet is to Threadworm.

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:52

lol at the Lego Trinity, esp the Hoooooly Ghost, and Swedes Playmobil academic haircuts.

Is it 'leisure pursuit', Swedes? the Heraclitus/Threadie thing?

Penthesileia · 16/12/2008 22:53

Central concept?

Penthesileia · 16/12/2008 22:55

Sorry onebat - was qu. above @ me? Order in sense of reason, yes, but not way exactly.

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 22:57

you mean leisure pursuit is wrong?
I thought either that, or 'time-sucking hypnotic'. Damn.

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 16/12/2008 23:02

Sorry Penth, yes it was.

But is it reason because reason and the word are interchangeable? or rather that the one begets the other?

Or is it that The Word is the embodiment of, the final expression of, Reason, which pre-existed?

Or is this an Appolonian/Dionysian thing?

I should read the link, shouldn't I? But I have shoes to Ebay.

Penthesileia · 16/12/2008 23:09

Go down to logos in the New Testament bit - explains it quite well. Better than I would!

Have you been reading Nietzsche...

Swedes · 16/12/2008 23:31

I thought logos meant law.
