Pedants' corner

Peadophiles and other abuses

On mumsnet today, I have read:

"Your" instead of "you're" - a perennial
"Text" instead of "texted"
"Corporal" instead of "capital"
"Steralised" instead of "sterilised"

But the worst of all is "peadophile". Gosh that's irritating. I'm going to keep away from the hang-em-and-flog-em threads, not on the grounds of general bloodthirstiness, or general taste and decency.

I'm going to have to avoid them for the abuses perpetrated upon the language of Shakespeare.

yes, but it is much better than "peedo"

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/11/2008 13:29

Oh no. Councilling instead of counselling is definitely the worst crime.

beanieb · 18/11/2008 13:29

Isn't 'texted' wrong?
I always say 'I sent a text' rather than I Texted! Texted sounds terrible!

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 13:33

BIWI - Don't, you are making my eyes hurt.

Beanie - If text is a verb, which I think it probably is now, it should be used properly -

As in "I've just texted Fred" rather than "I've just text Fred".

Thank you for posting this Quattro. The 'peadophile' thing is especially important because at the moment there seem to be a lot of posters around arguing for castration and the like, and I wouldn't want any greengrocers to get attacked.

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 13:40

Thanks Kathy. These are very worrying times. I'm anxious because I think my son may be a peadophile. He does love peas so.

OP posts:
beanieb · 18/11/2008 14:52

I always say 'I sent a text message to fred' Is that ok?

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 14:53

That sounds lovely.

Does anyone remember that a paediatrician had her house trashed when the NOTW ran a campaign?

tearinghairout · 18/11/2008 15:03

I'm so used to 'peadophile' that it registers as a legitimate alternative in my mind now .

It should definitely be defined as someone who loves peas. Brilliant.

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 15:03

Oh dear. :{

In our house we like the term 'paedofiddlia.' It was used by some not-very-bright interviewee in a vox pop on telly who clearly had 'paedophilia' mixed up with 'kiddy fiddling'. V useful word.

Poledra · 18/11/2008 15:12

Kathy am loving "paedofiddlia". However, am now going to have to hide thread as the title makes me wince every time I see it in active convos.

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 15:14

Oh yes, sorry, should have thought of that.

boudoiricca · 18/11/2008 15:17

BoF... I remember the paediatrician and still shake my head with despair and disbelief.

HRHSaintMamazon · 18/11/2008 15:21

snort @ paedofiddlia.

that is ace. i am so going to use that from now on.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 15:22
Smile
Lakelover · 18/11/2008 15:24

I'm with you on this Quattro - but nothing riles me more than the (mis)use of the words 'there' 'they're' and 'their' in threads and 'your' instead of 'you're'; a personal hatred of mine! It winds me up so much! That's why I lurk around pedants' corner feeling like I belong!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 16:05

There's a lot of 'definatly' about today as well.

SheikYerbouti · 18/11/2008 16:09

I saw a Peadofile in the supermarket on Sunday. He wox eying up my packit of Burds eye petty pwah.

'SoK tho, I set up a vijilanti againsa Peadofiles

SheikYerbouti · 18/11/2008 16:14

Disagree with the treatment of "text" as a verb.

I definitely see it as a noun. Texted sounds wrong. I sent a text is much better.

IMHO

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 16:15

Howdya no he woz a peado Shake? Did he hav those oldfashnd glasses peado's wear?

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 16:22

There is indeed a lot of definately around today. Do you think Shakespeare may have been a peadophile? He may have been.

OP posts:
Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 16:25

Well he did write 'Romeo and Juliet', which IIRC is little more than kiddie porn.

artichokes · 18/11/2008 16:25

The paediatrician getting attacked is an urban myth. We had to research it for work and there is no proof it actually happened.
