Peadophiles and other abuses

On mumsnet today, I have read:

"Your" instead of "you're" - a perennial
"Text" instead of "texted"
"Corporal" instead of "capital"
"Steralised" instead of "sterilised"

But the worst of all is "peadophile". Gosh that's irritating. I'm going to keep away from the hang-em-and-flog-em threads, not on the grounds of general bloodthirstiness, or general taste and decency.

I'm going to have to avoid them for the abuses perpetrated upon the language of Shakespeare.

Are you sure Artichokes? This looked quite plausible to me (though I would love to think it was a myth)

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 16:28

oh I see.... just the fact that she wasn't actually attacked but her home was vandalised and we don't know it was because of her job.

retiredgoth1 · 18/11/2008 16:34

Peadophiles, eh?

....particularly sickening are those with a taste for petits pois.

I would like to add "independant" to the list of shame. I can't help wondering what actually is enclosed in the locket.

I think rather unhelpfully that text is a noun and a verb- am I wrong? eg 'I sent her a text' and 'I am texting her with the info'. I don't like 'texted' though, it grammatically seems to follow the rules but just feels wrong.

The Gwent incident took place but does not resemble the howling mob most people imagine.

see here

my mother ( refines pedantic fwiw) argues that the correct term is actually paedarast not paedophile... That's what they were called back in the day apparently...
She insists paedophile truly means a lover of children. Such as a Francophile is to the French...
She is going to get fire bombed as she fails to concede the term now means far more sinister things, so continually uses it to describe herself in akins of linguistic rebellion Leaving me aghast.
She has mispronounced "detritus" all her life, declaring it is not the same with a long I...

RG

Oh yes, I think we should revive the word pederast. So much more accurate. What could it be confused with?

Yes I think text is a noun and a verb. With a past participle that seems to be neglected...

Oh think the peadophile might have been me

My spelling is awful

BitOfFun · 18/11/2008 16:48

ROFL @ Piffle's mum - a true pedant!

Fascinating the urban myths that have sprung up around the paediatrician/paedophile story - a good study in media hysteria.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 16:56

Piffle's mum's point is excellent. 'Philia' is defined in the Greek/English lexicon as love/friendship, while eros is erotic love. I presume paedophiles themselves prefer the term paedophile, while pederast has always had a more negative connotation.

boudoiricca · 18/11/2008 17:13

Ha! Thanks artichoke, I stand corrected.

nellynaemates · 18/11/2008 18:44

Wiki's definition of pederasty -

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pederasty

Doesn't really work as an alternative to paedophilia if you ask me.

nellynaemates · 18/11/2008 18:46

I of course mean an alternative to the TERM paedophilia.

Quattrocento · 18/11/2008 20:16

Thank you Nelly. I have just gone toxic on another thread involving the use of the verb to text.
