We just call Egg Pie.
Young DS loved pies, but refused quiche. So we had to rename quiche.

The school I went to had heard of vegetarians, but only just. A typical week was:

Quiche
Flan
Omelette
1 of the above
Macaroni cheese

(Quiche, flan and omelette were all the same thing in their minds).

Anna-ees Anna-ees

There was a Blasé scent called 'Blaze'.

Edited

I think I would have described it more as Ann eye ees

but thanks to the poster who has reminded me of it. It's still available so I might treat myself.

Not as funny as when it's pronounced as 'kwitch!' 😆

@ErrolTheDragon ,he is Spanish and British by citizenship but English by birth and half-Scottish half-Spanish by blood.

It's ok to use the not-quite Spanish pronunciation e.g. port-ee-yo. It's just not likely to sound perfect unless you speak like a native.

@MurphysColeslaw , of course. We also laughed at the hohoba advert.

Port-ee-yo is fine where I am. We say Sev-ee-ya, not Sev-eel-ya.

Nearly as good as my friend who - I kid you not - insists on calling Quinoa ‘Kwin- oah’

I think as that’s how it is phonetically I understand. Have you mentioned it or are you just judging?

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 17/10/2026 21:40

My mum would sound the T in buffet. My MIL called pizza a peeza.

likelysuspect · 18/10/2026 08:22

I cant imagine there is a Spanish/French/Italian mums net where people are sniggering at friends and colleagues attempts to pronounce English words

They couldnt give a shit and neither should we.

The first part of your post I agree with. The second part is not your call to make. This thread is probably not for you.

@Chersfrozenface , I am aware of that but if you listen to how English monoglots say many French words, they mangle a lot of them.
Like Sartre getting said as Sart-ruh and genre zhon-ruh.

I’m an English monoglot. I’d love to speak another language but circumstances and background didn’t provide those opportunities. I’ve tried classes and have a few words in French and German and I can recognise Greek letters and some words.

But I’m a monoglot. I am not good at grammar so I need to be surrounded by people speaking the other language to hear and practise and my life hasn’t given me that opportunity.

So snigger away at my pronunciation but please recognise the circumstances that helped you speak other languages.

PleasantPedant · 18/10/2026 12:19

@grumpygrape , It's not Ann-eye-ees. The a and i are pronounced separately. That's what a diaeresis does.

@Dontevenlookatme ,ex-MIL had a Spanish surname.

@HoppityBun ,I'm not sniggering at anyone. Carry on making excuses for the chip on your shoulder.
I'm ok with people mispronouncing things as long as others aren't puzzling over what they mean.
If you want to hear how something like Sartre sounds in a French accent, head to a translation app.

twas a flan until the mid 80s I think when delia smith did quiche Lorraine

It was egg and bacon flan when I was a kid (60s).

It was commonplace in the UK before the 1980s.

Well, I don't do phonetic spelling but the way I pronounce it, as explained to me by a french person, and Google translate say it the same way as me so it must be my phonetic spelling.
Would Ann aye ees work for you?

garlictwist · 18/10/2026 20:20

DH and I pronounce it “qw-ishy” in homage to his late Glaswegian grandma.

HoppityBun · 18/10/2026 20:20

Years ago, and it was years, because it was at the point where flans were becoming quiches, I was in conversation with a lovely man who kept talking about a kwish. Took me ages to grasp what he meant.

Appaloosa2000 · 18/10/2026 20:48

Not really. It's clear that the a and the i are separate sounds.
It compares with a word like zoology, which is zo-ology not zoo-ology.
I doubt that you say cooper-ate or coo-operate.

PleasantPedant · 17/10/2026 13:04

Nah, it's a pizzer.

My lovely Scottish aunties used to call it a peeza pie!

@grumpygrape , I'm being pedantic, but there isn't anything in Anaïs to make the 'eye' sound.

mathanxiety · 19/10/2026 02:53

grumpygrape · 15/10/2026 13:03

That'll be Framerican like Fill-lay.

Filet is a French word, and for the most part the Fill-ay pronunciation is used in the US for the noun, though the verb is usually pronounced Fill-et.

The Filet spelling is the one most often used in supermarkets where I live, in the upper Midwest, which was explored and initially (sparsely) settled by the French. There are many remnants of the French in English pronunciation, in placenames, in names of rivers, and other natural features.

Zoo-ology is a perfectly acceptable pronunciation of zoology, even if it needs another O to make the pronunciation work. The zo-ology pronunciation is even a little archaic at this point.

There's nothing really wrong with either pronunciation there. They're both honest efforts, and close enough.

Genre is a word that has been taken directly from French, and it could have turned out a lot worse. It might yet.

Sartre isn't a name that crops up much, so if the Sar-truh pronunciation is used and others understand who you're talking about, then surely it's a case of 'job done'?

Tchor-eetho

Chore-ee-so or chore-ee-zo if you're speaking North American Spanish.

North American chorizo itself isn't the same beast as Spanish chorizo either.
