Ok, but seriously, how do you say Chorizo..?

Tchor-eetho

DawnBreaks · 15/10/2026 22:28

Chor is oh? (chorizo)
When my sister was young, we sent her into a chippy way down south to see what there was on the menu. She came back with a fairly accurate account of their offerings, but we were curious about their 'sliveries.' We wondered if they were a southern delicacy maybe? On closer inspection by us older members of the family it transpired they were saveloys! Now saveloys are always referred to as sliveries!

I'm not sure if it's better or worse than a quickie!

It’s always quickie in our house!

English people just don’t sound right when they try to pronounce Spanish words with the th sound. Except for Michael Portillo on account of him also actually being Spanish.

RaraRachael · 15/10/2026 22:59

@ErrolTheDragon I agree. My friend always says paella like pie-ay-ya. I think it sounds daft as she wouldn't say Paree for Paris or Barthelona.

It's pah-ey-ah.

WobblyJogger · 15/10/2026 23:09

We just call Egg Pie.
Young DS loved pies, but refused quiche. So we had to rename quiche.

Yes I'm well aware of that. It sounds silly in a Scottish accent.

Smokewhistle · 15/10/2026 23:25

Worked on a deli counter years ago. Had a woman come in every week for a slice of Kweecheee!

MurphysColeslaw · 15/10/2026 23:37

But where does that leave us with tortillas and jalapeños ?

MarxistMags · 15/10/2026 23:42

My Dad always called it quake !
Many years ago I was looking all over the supermarket for it for him .
My grown up children still call it that.

JJWT · 16/10/2026 20:39

And wth is that weird zeddy/j sound they insert into parmesan?!

TiredofMotorways · 16/10/2026 21:10

MurphysColeslaw · 15/10/2026 22:01

Shite-ache mushrooms
Pit-za
and Kwin-oah are just a small part of my mil’s repertoire.

Lol my (highly educated, as she's keen on pointing out) has pit-za.

And for some reason , in shortens the o in "covvid"

Not as silly as pie-ay-ah

Given that CO stands for coronavirus, VI for virus, and D stands for disease, it really should be a short o though.

Are you saying pizza should be peet-za rather than pit-za?

upinaballoon · 17/10/2026 13:03

When I did O level cookery we called it a savoury flan.

brownbootsandhats · 17/10/2026 13:04

twas a flan until the mid 80s I think when delia smith did quiche Lorraine

If you haven't learned Italian you won't know that the 'i' after the 'c' causes the 'c' to make a 'ch' sound.

The same sort of thing happens in English. We often have a soft 'c' if it is followed by 'e' or 'i', but our soft 'c' makes a 'ss' sound.
