Pedants' corner

Every sentence on a new line

Not sure if this is strictly pedantry, but is any one else slightly irritated by the growing trend of every sentence of a post being on a new line?
I assume it comes from texting which has become punctuation free so each sentence is a standalone message.
It makes everything seem overly profound.
But I suppose it is better than the single paragraph streams of consciousness that you also see.

Yanbu tbh.

hoppyfruitloop · 15/09/2026 13:46

She says starting a sentence with. But

MagpiePi · 15/09/2026 13:53

But there's nothing wrong with starting a sentence with 'but'!

Punctuation-free.

People in glass houses.....

"Are you also annoyed by the new variant in punctuating direct speech?" She asked.
"It drives me mad" She continued.

Cotopaxi · 15/09/2026 14:25

I find this seriously annoying, and saw it on a thread just a few minutes ago.

Why do people start a new paragraph for every sentence?

It irritates the shit out of me.

See what I mean?

Aarghhh.

😠

What do you mean?

CatherineHoward17 · 15/09/2026 14:28

I've noticed this too! For me, it's usually on emailed newsletters. I've attached an example from a local wildlife sanctuary, who do fantastic work and I do support them, but the way they write their emails has changed recently and I suspect they are now composed by AI.

I do it a bit on here. I feel it breaks the potential wall of text up and is easier to read.

I'm always looking at this site on a phone, so one sentence can already seem 'paragraph length'.

somewhereintheworld · 15/09/2026 15:04

Oooh that is very annoying 😒

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but are you saying that correct sentence and paragraph construction doesn't matter to you?

This is Pedants' Corner, after all.

ohfook · 15/09/2026 17:04

Yes! I see this loads particularly on business Facebook pages (I’m not a pedant btw more of a hypocrite). I often wonder if it’s because of worsening attention spans and people struggling to read blocks of text anymore.

Loosely linked to that, a study showed the vast majority of people who comment on click bait only read the headline and don’t even open the actual story.

I’d rather read that than a wall of unpunctuated text.

(Apologies for the hijack)

Why are there so many deleted posts? I didn’t think this would elicit responses that broke the MN guidelines.

I want to know about Grogu too!

One. Word. Sentences.
Please. Make. It. Stop.

I've just seen a post starting with "It is a truth universally acknowledged that..." AAAAAARGH!

crikeymikey123 · 15/09/2026 23:24

typesetting trying to do the job of better words, very very annoying

I think it was people unused to the purpose of Pedants' Corner who stumbled in by accident and then got angry about it.😂
