“Proper” English

DH can’t say ‘were’. Nothing winds me up more than ‘was you ok’ or ‘was you good today’. But I’ve learnt to live with it. The only problem being - my 5yo DC is now picking this up. Ironically, English isn’t my first language but definitely is his. How on earth do I stop this disease spreading??

Sorry, can't help except to suggest correcting your daughter every time.

We have a couple of friends where one partner always says 'them ones' but her partner of 30+ years always says 'those'.

I worked with someone who sometimes said 'this' for 'these' - this peas, this carrots. Only sometimes though, which made it all the more annoying.

My DH says "I seen" instead of "i saw". After 37 years I'm used to it.

I love it when people have their own way of speaking.

I don’t agree with bashing regional dialect, no.

'We was' drives me nuts. I love a regional dialect, but 'we was' is so grating.

“I was sat” drives me crazy. Sitting. You were sitting!

My Dh says I et instead of I ate and he also says gob which grates immensely!

Yes, I would say that’s fairly typical London colloquialism.

But @iwashere2026 is perfectly entitled to expect her children to speak properly in the dialect she wants.

At nursery/school there will be many people not using standard English. I wouldn't worry.

Et instead of eight for ate is a traditional, older pronunciation. Older RP speakers often use it ime.

Yup. Fairly normal in various parts. Same as the other things that would drive you insane mentioned on this thread. Just model correct use of English and correct your DD.

Just correct her by saying the sentence again with ‘we were’ when you hear her say it, no need to pick up your DH on the way he says things.

My nieces had a wonderful nanny who had a strong London dialect. DNs picked up on it )to my sister’s chagrin!) but eventually they stopped doing it as my sister corrected what they said when they were with her.

Your DD will hear lots of different ways of saying things when she’s at school. Careful modelling at home usually wins through.

You’d hear it in Yorkshire, I heard if growing up in Scotland. I don’t think it is localised dialect, just poor grammar.

My now x mh and xmil are luddites. I refuse to respond to my kids if they don’t get it right.
