Pedants' corner

Worn out by the weary people.

My first thread in Pedants' corner, so I'm wary of making a mistake. I'm getting weary of seeing and hearing weary used when I think that wary is meant.

Yes, I see that one rather more often than I'd like too.

Buscobel · 16/05/2026 11:28

I can’t understand why I see ‘dose’ so much, when people mean ‘does’.

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · 16/05/2026 11:54

And people 'wondering' all over the place.

Fantailed · 16/05/2026 11:57

I have to say that the one that drives me irrationally crazy is people using 'floor' for 'ground' (ie the surface under your feet when outdoors and no, not a forest floor), but yes, agreed. I too am weary of the lack of wariness, and wonder about the lack of wandering.

Gotback · 16/05/2026 12:18

I've recently seen a few instances of people being "burned" by hot water. I mentioned to a friend that it should be "scalded" & he wrote "scolded".

RollonSpringplease · 16/05/2026 13:23

I really need to curb my annoyance at the word being used for the kerb between the road and pavement.

SouthwarkLass · 16/05/2026 17:12

Mixing up 'affect' and 'effect' is my pet hate.

Oh hell, yes. Also the surprising number of people who misuse “imply” and “infer”, and don’t get me started on “less” and “fewer”.

Seymour5 · 16/05/2026 18:24

All of the above!

Keepthecat · 16/05/2026 18:55

I hate people saying 'regularly' when they mean 'frequently'.

PassTheCranberrySauce · 16/05/2026 19:03

Hate this.

Also, ‘diffuse’ a situation - YOU MEAN DEFUSE YA TOOL!

I’m a teacher and we have to write a short note on our shared app when we sanction a pupil. Colleagues always write, ‘he was consistently talking’ when they mean ‘constantly’.

DuckCootLoon · 17/05/2026 19:57

I think the reason that this one especially annoys me is because it's not always clear what people mean.
There was a radio show with a guest who kept describing how weary he was of a particular group of unpleasant people. I couldn't tell if he was worried or just fed up.

Defiantly and definitely kill me.

Wait, what’s wrong with this one? Why can’t doing something with regularity mean doing it frequently? “I regularly find crumbs in bra” not okay? Should I only say “I frequently find crumbs in my bra”?

(For the avoidance of doubt, I mean this as a genuine question)

Keepthecat · 18/05/2026 10:51

'Regularly' means you find crumbs in your bra every Tuesday at 9am (or whenever). So it's something which happens at set intervals. For 'frequently' , you could say often or always, or all the time. It's not the end of the world, it's just the thread asked about what sets your teeth on edge, and that's one of mine.

DappledThings · 18/05/2026 10:53

Generally for genuinely is annoying and baffling in equal measure.

That's a Year 1 mistake.

SerendipityCat · 18/05/2026 11:10

Another one from a very recent thread about party drop-outs, to "except" an invitation.

UnPetitDunPetit · 18/05/2026 11:12

Another one is loath v loathe(d). So many posters claiming they are "loathed to admit XYZ" 🙄

Just a typo.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 18/05/2026 11:15

Discreet vs discrete. 🤯. "my DH is away, come round the back door at 9pm but be discrete about it"

GreenCandleWax · 18/05/2026 11:30

Lose not loose. And bear, not bare - both are MN favourites.

I don’t think these are just typos.

SardinesOnButteredToast · 18/05/2026 20:14

They are all hanging offences.

He borrowed me some cash. He lent me some money.

Why is she so crawl? Why is she so cruel?

It’s exactly the same team apart from 3 changes.
There are 3 changes in the team.

Aaaargh.
