Pedants' corner

Worn out by the weary people.

My first thread in Pedants' corner, so I'm wary of making a mistake. I'm getting weary of seeing and hearing weary used when I think that wary is meant.

OP posts:

All of these. I am an uptight pedant and not a bit sorry.

PootlePoseysMa · 18/05/2026 20:23

Kier Starmer is not going anywhere.

Kier Starmer will not resign.

Aaargh

Anybody’s thoughts on Kier Starmer and Angela Raynor belong up their arses.

You could put any name in there and it would irritate me.

The England Football Manager is not going anywhere.
The Head of the PTA is not going anywhere.

Why can’t they just say they won’t resign ?

Just a typo.

No I don’t think it is. I frequently see comments on local Facebook groups (and it is only ever on Facebook) written “dose any1 no why the road is shut” or “dose any1 no of any jobs goin”

Oh hell, yes. Also the surprising number of people who misuse “imply” and “infer”, and don’t get me started on “less” and “fewer”.

When I first moved to the UK from Australia in about 1990 I walked into a M&S food store and saw that the express checkout was labelled “12 Items or Fewer” and my pedantic little heart knew immediately this was the place for me. In Australia they were (and still are) “12 Items or Less”.

CeliaCanth · 19/05/2026 07:37

I can’t bear “lead” when the writer means “led” or a “sneak peak”.

Fantailed · 19/05/2026 07:40

‘I laid (or layed) down on the bed’ is irritating, but the one that actually makes me feel mildly despairing is the substitution of ‘he’s’ for ‘his’ eg ‘He picked up he’s suitcase’.

dotdotdotdash · 19/05/2026 08:20

Using 'loose' instead of 'lose'. I think we've lost the battle with that one it comes up so frequently 😆

I think ‘led’ is disappearing. I keep seeing lead, and of course in context, my pedantic brain says it as ‘leed’ which is fine if it’s on a dog, or leading from the front. Lead is of course also fine if it’s a lump of heavy metal. If I led the horse to water would I need a lead?

They actually started with “5 items or less” and had to change all the signs a few weeks later ( due to complaints from pedants like us probably)!

EffortlesslyDirected · 19/05/2026 09:40

Phase instead of faze. I was unphased by the turn of events.

To be honest I get more annoyed by noticing that the person in front has 13 items!

Especially where the 'sneak peek' or, as you say, 'sneak peak' is on a website where it is so NOT 'sneak" ... it's available to anyone with access to the Internet, so millions of people around the world.

That’s even better - a country where people care enough about grammar to complain in sufficient numbers for the shop to take notice!

I really hate the expression "sneak peek". Why does it have to be sneaky? It's (not its) meaningless twaddle!

GreenCandleWax · 19/05/2026 12:10

Usually heard from weather forecasters on television - "the bulk of the country", meaning most of or the greater part of the country. Just sounds wrong.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2026 15:05

I think that was the PP's point as Angela Rayner's name was misspelt as well.

Oops. Missed that.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 19/05/2026 18:07

Yes Angela Raynor is befuddling. Her name is written all over the Internet fgs

And don't get me started on Kier

Where/ were get substituted far too often

Indeed, it was my feeble attempt at comedic banter that quite literally flew over everyone’s heads.

As will that.

I can’t understand why I see ‘dose’ so much, when people mean ‘does’.

That’s a fat fingers one. A spellchecker can’t pick it up.

I can’t type “because”. It’s “becasue” every single time… (Ironically, the autocorrect fought me on that one!)

OrdinaryGirl · 20/05/2026 06:37

To all of this - AMEN AND AMEN. 👏🏻
