Driving me mad all over the internet - women in their poker dot dresses.
Polka. It's POLKA.
Rant over.

Correct. Allowed.

LadyDanburysHat · 07/05/2026 15:27

There are so many things like this, where people write it as they think they have heard it. Is it down to less people reading, and therefore having no clue how to spell things?

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/05/2026 15:37

Not heard that one - it’s hilarious. I saw propergander (propaganda) earlier, that did make me laugh.

midJulytarget · 07/05/2026 15:50

Although, I suppose you could make dots like that with a poker, if you were very careful.

The thing that bothers me re fashion/clothes is "crutch" when they mean "crotch". It's got something faintly Freudian about it.

Ahem, fewer.

(This is pedants' corner).

My sincere apologies

I think propergander deserves a proper gander.

I read somewhere that websites have users not readers. How people read paper-based articles is different to how they use online news pages.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/05/2026 18:22

I've just seen another poker dot on Facebook - describing her new dress

I think older people do say 'crutch'. I think there was a discussion on Mumsnet Telly Addicts The Great British Sewing Bee some while ago.

Re poker dots - I pronounce it very definitely pol ka, but I think there might be areas where it's pronounced more like 'poker'.

Where you be from?.

Crutch? For crotch? Older people?

I think 'older people' are as articulate as 'younger people' when it comes to misnomers.

You stick your head in Pedants' corner and make statements?

And pronounce polka dots as pol-ka dots...

Is the 'area' where it's pronounced poker everywhere?

I dunno.

PleasantPedant · 08/05/2026 22:54

@BootMaker , are you feeling OK?

Where I am from older people would say crutch, and polka as pole-ka but barely sounding the L.

Are you taking the piss in padants' corner? I feel that you are.

You must know that it's spelt polka. But pronounced poker.

Yes!

PleasantPedant · 08/05/2026 22:59

I wouldn't say crotch. It was a bit like a swear word (along the same lines as cunt).

Is this, or not, pedants' corner?

PleasantPedant · 08/05/2026 23:11

It's not padants' corner.

Qualitypinnacle · 08/05/2026 23:12

Esme on the sewing bee says crutch, and it's what I used to hear as a child

custardlover · 08/05/2026 23:18

I am enjoying this.

I don't know Esme.

Crutch is not crotch.

It's not padants' corner.

Obvious typo.

CRUTCH | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary

BootMaker · 08/05/2026 23:24

Yes. I know what a crutch is.

PleasantPedant · 08/05/2026 23:24

crutch
[krʌtʃ]
noun
a long stick with a crosspiece at the top, used as a support under the armpit by a person with an injury or disability.

a thing used for support or reassurance:
"they use the Internet as a crutch for their loneliness"

the crotch of the body or a garment:
"the water was up to my crutch"
"overalls reinforced with leather where the crutch took the saddle's chafing"

PleasantPedant · 08/05/2026 23:26

I know what a crotch is, @BootMaker .

SpellingBumble · 08/05/2026 23:29

Oh no, I laughed at the title and then realised further down that growing up I called them poker dots - but I always knew what the spelling was. I always assumed that poker was the proper pronunciation of polka dots... I am cringing for my eight year old self (and thank God they've been out of fashion so that I haven't embarrassed myself in the intervening years).
