Driving me mad all over the internet - women in their poker dot dresses.

Rant over.

Are you winding us up @BootMaker ? Of course polka has an L sound in it! And the o is the same o sound as in "on", not "oh"

TheSmallAssassin · 08/05/2026 23:32

And I agree with you @PleasantPedant about crutch.

Oh no, I laughed at the title and then realised further down that growing up I called them poker dots - but I always knew what the spelling was. I always assumed that poker was the proper pronunciation of polka dots... I am cringing for my eight year old self (and thank God they've been out of fashion so that I haven't embarrassed myself in the intervening years).

I’m sure it would not have been noticed, the l is very subtle x

PleasantPedant · 08/05/2026 23:42

I wear polka dots regardless of fashion.

No need to cringe. Polka is largely pronounced poker in UK English.

Absolutely not! There's no L in polka. Don't be ridiculous.

Poh-ka.

BootMaker · 09/05/2026 00:02

Poh-ka dots.

Not pol-ka dots.

BootMaker · 09/05/2026 00:08

I'd accede poh-kuhr.

No L.

MissisBee · 09/05/2026 00:27

We definitely pronounce the L in polka in Northern Ireland. And the o sounds like "oh"
I'm going to make a very general assumption that it's the same in Scotland.

Shinyhappyapple · 09/05/2026 00:32

Ever heard of such a thing as regional accents @BootMaker? Surely if one is bothered enough about spelling / grammar etc to consider themselves a pedant then they are aware of this ?

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/05/2026 00:35

Interestingly a quick google tells me that poh-kah is a from some American states.

In the 80s it was definitely polka! Strawberry Switchblade anyone!

TheSmallAssassin · 09/05/2026 01:05

Yes, loved Strawberry Switchblade and also dancing a polka, though I haven't really got the energy for them these days. I have never heard anyone call either the dance or the dots "poker" but as @Shinyhappyapple says, in some accents, people might do 😊

SallyDraperGetInHere · 09/05/2026 01:08

I read on here today about a ‘Jackal and Hyde’ personality.

midJulytarget · 09/05/2026 09:15

Kate Princess of Middleton wore a poLka dot skirt yesterday - she must be on here and sending us a sign! Hi Kate!!

Esme on the sewing bee says crutch, and it's what I used to hear as a child

Yes, I'm in Esme's age group, I guess, and we said 'crutch' without thinking there was anything wrong with it and so did my Mum, born 1916, and her cousins. They all sewed so used sewing terms.

Poker dots.

How many counties of England have you investigated to see how they pronounce the word which is written 'polka'?

No it's not, what are you on about

Polka, spelt polka, pronounced polka

RaraRachael · 09/05/2026 19:02

We once had a party dance called the Bluebell Polka. One of the teachers wrote on the party programme, "Bluebell Poker" 🙄

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/05/2026 01:16

Even the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries state it's pronounced POLKA

The only word pronounced poker in UK English is….poker! The l in polka is not silent.

ManufacturedConcerns · 10/05/2026 01:57

I'd pronounce polka dots differently to polka dance.

RitaIncognita · 10/05/2026 03:04

I pronounce the l in polka dot. I'm from the Southern US. Lots of people in the US don't pronounce the l. They might misspell it as "poka" if they had never seen it written.

I assume all these "poker" folks are non-rhotic speakers.

awfulapril · 10/05/2026 04:56

Polka. I say it like that.

There literally is an L in polka. It’s there - in the middle. Polka and poker are pronounced very differently.

MaryBeardsShoes · 10/05/2026 07:33

bootmaker must be on a wind up.
