Please understand 'your' does not mean 'you're'.

The confusion around your and you're is a complete disaster. It's absolutely everywhere and it would be so good to sort this out. If only people could think, 'am I trying to say YOU ARE, or not..?'

If you're unsure, the apostrophe is there to indicate a missing letter. So you're means 'you are', with the 'a' of 'are' missing

If you are talking about ownership, such as 'your bag', it's simply your.

You are (you're) is NEVER written as your.

I suspect the vast majority of Mumsnetters know this.
It’s elsewhere on social media that I consistently see this mistake, as well as ‘defiantly’ for definitely 😆

SueBlime · 05/04/2026 07:52

I saw "youre" bag yesterday.

Buscobel · 05/04/2026 09:56

You’re so right!

I have seen a great number of posts on Mumsnet where it's clear the OP doesn't know this! 😞

I have also seen ‘your’ being used instead of ‘you’ll’!

As in…

’your be so happy if that happens’

🤦🏻‍♀️

Perfidia · 05/04/2026 10:32

@JMSA it’s honestly everywhere on MN.

The pity of it is that posters who do this, for whatever reason, definitely won’t be reading this thread.

Thanks for always been there for us. 😉😁😁

Chemenger · 05/04/2026 10:36

They won’t be reading it because they’re too busy tidying their draws. Or should I say their two buzzy tidying they’re draws?

Punctuation saves lives!!!

Your tea grandma or you’re tea grandma?

I think defiantly is often autocorrect. For some reason, despite defiantly being a word I rarely use, definitely often autocorrects to defiantly for me, presumably as a result of a typo on my part. And of course if I don't spot it, it becomes a word I use more frequently so the algorithm corrects to it more frequently.

Do you mean toast?

Why does tea mean?

My exes wife uses R for I'll. No idea how she thinks it's the same word. Took me ages to work out who 'R' was when I received a text from "ex" saying "R pick the boys up at 11". Still, I could always tell when she was sending messages on his behalf!

HelenaWilson · 19/04/2026 01:12

Something that sets my teeth on edge is ur.

Lazy textspeak/typing, or trying to hide that the texter doesn't know whether they should be writing your or you're?

My brother’s partner sometimes sends me messages from his phone pretending to be him.

Except…I think my brother knows how to spell my name after 40 years 😂

The R thing is very strange!
