The confusion around your and you're is a complete disaster. It's absolutely everywhere and it would be so good to sort this out. If only people could think, 'am I trying to say YOU ARE, or not..?'

If you're unsure, the apostrophe is there to indicate a missing letter. So you're means 'you are', with the 'a' of 'are' missing

If you are talking about ownership, such as 'your bag', it's simply your.

You are (you're) is NEVER written as your.

Sigh. It makes me wonder about education standards.

My sibling, a teacher pushing 60, consistently writes should "of" would "of" could "of" in emails.
I sit on my hands.

ItsGooodToTalk · 19/04/2026 04:56

I often see 'could of' instead of 'could have'...

Also loose does not mean lose. 😞

This one crops up frequently on MN.

I think defiantly is often autocorrect. For some reason, despite defiantly being a word I rarely use, definitely often autocorrects to defiantly for me, presumably as a result of a typo on my part. And of course if I don't spot it, it becomes a word I use more frequently so the algorithm corrects to it more frequently.

My phone sometimes autocorrects your for you're. It's annoying and when I notice I go back and edit, but there will be occasions I miss the window.

Just noticed that "their" is there twice and the first is wrong!!! I post something similar to this yearly on fb (when it pops up on memories!!)

Please understand 'your' does not mean 'you're'.

It's not unusual to see someone say "I'm a teacher and ..." and there (Wink) spelling or grammar leaves a lot to be desired. I often wonder what they teach, cycling proficiency perhaps.

Your instead of you're has been everywhere on social media this week. It almost feels unstoppable which is so painful. 😞

But language evooooolves.....

Not in this sense it doesn't.

Language evolution is how a wireless became a radio. Not crap grammar being excused with that as a reason.

HelenaWilson · 26/04/2026 20:22

Not in this sense it doesn't.

I know. But someone will always pop up on these threads to say that.

LotusMandala · 26/04/2026 22:23

I see people using ‘his’ instead of he’s a lot.

’his gone to the shop’

no, you fucking thicko.

Do teachers need to have a GCSE pass in English?
I think you can teach English without further qualifications in the subject.

I saw this today: "Myself and a group of staff are creating a Memorial Garden at our school."
The poster might not be a teacher.

I found with teachers that you can't correct them. I might be basing it on my know-it-all siblings who talk to me as if I'm a young child.

I corrected a teacher on Facebook who erratically inserted apostrophes into many plurals. So annoying!

I saw "free reign" in a post on Mumsnet a day or two ago.
I couldn't decide whether to rebuke privately or publicly, so I chickened out and I am venting here instead 😡!
