I (and I) have accepted defeat

After years of cringing when people use "and I" when it should be "and me", I have officially accepted that there is no hope!

I recently saw a video of Prince Willy and Kate where she got it wrong, so what hope is there for anyone else?! 😭

Tiktok and Instagram is also full of people saying "look at my husband and I's new house/car/airfryer". If we're now commonly using "I's" then we're all doomed!

For those who are unsure..
"Bob and I went by bus" = correct because if you remove Bob, "I went by bus" is still correct .
"The bus ran over Bob and I" = incorrect because if you remove Bob, "The bus ran over I" is incorrect
.
An easy way to remember it is that you should use "I" when you are doing something but use "me" when it is being done to you.
Your welcome!

So glad you raised this OP. I heard the one where Kate said “William and I”, and I found myself really questioning myself. Surely the men in grey suits would have checked this out before she said it?

MinnieMountain · 18/09/2025 13:54

It’s a laziness thing in my DH’s case @3pears . It’s a recent thing and DS (11) has started copying him. I do correct DS.

Edited

Well that depends on what else she said.

William and I are going on holiday - correct.
I hope you will come on holiday with William and I - not.

Spotted today Kookoo

Perhaps that's why 'myself' is used so often nowadays, because people are unsure whether it should be I or me. "Give it to myself".

I’ve been talking to a lot of car salesmen recently, they ALL say , ‘yourself and myself’.

NebulousSadTimes · 18/09/2025 15:42

@notatinydancer I am finding so many things to do rather than go to the car showroom to start the process of buying a new car. Thank you for adding to my list 😭

Well, that would be another mistake.

I am intrigued by pendants. Why do you think these things bother you so much? I have friends who are pendants and I find I am on edge when I write a text to them. Being on edge makes me more likely to make mistakes.

It’s the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you’re shit!

Sorry @SlimtoddyI couldn’t resist that, but didn’t want to leave you hanging…

What was the video where Kate made the error? I remember when she hadn't been seen for a while and lunatics online were declaring she was dead then she made that video sitting on the bench. Some conspiracy theorists claimed it had to be fake because at one point she said "William and me" and the real Kate would never make such a mistake.

It wasn't a mistake, it was completely correct and in the same video she once said "William and me" and once "William and I", both correctly in different contexts.

it was definitely the latter (wrong) way. Something along the lines of "thank you for the wonderful welcome you have given William and I"

Me accepted defeat on this years ago.

Are you?

I'm rather partial to a nice bracelet myself.

@SavePlasticine , your poor punctuation weakens your point. Perhaps you should avoid Tiktok and Instagram, or share the link to the video.

@Slimtoddy , I'm not intrigued by pendants.

Is a comma after two spaces considered good punctuation..???!!!!

Stay strong, OP. I am the editor of all longer pieces of writing in my extended family, and bit by bit, I am winning this battle. And when I explain it, it (of course) makes complete sense to them.

This gives me hope!

I gave up the first year King Charles did his Christmas message and said ‘myself and my wife’. I wasn’t even watching it, it was on in the background, but my hackles rose and my ears twitched!

The English language is doomed! Doomed I say!!

I have this role too. My student grandsons send essays and, now CVs, for me to check. I am pleased to say there is hardly anything I need to correct these days.

Duplicate post. Why does this keep happening? I've noticed other people's posts being duplicated too.

JellyCoffeeBean · 25/09/2025 07:40

OP, I totally agree with you. I am fed up of reading on mumsnet “Me and DH were having dinner when…”.

I also hear things like “come and speak to Paul and I” a lot. It’s horrible.

I think the misuse of “I” is predominantly in the South East where people incorrectly think the use of “me” is wrong in every context.

Mumsnet puts that in automatically.

Worse (and I see it more here than on other forums) is "Me and DH was having dinner when..."

I'm not from the UK, so sometimes I'm not sure if wording that I find weird/awkward is wrong or just a difference in how those in the UK say/write things.

Using 'Was' instead of 'were' and vice versa is quite common in the UK. It is not Standard English grammar although it could be considered regional.
