Pedants' corner

I (and I) have accepted defeat

After years of cringing when people use "and I" when it should be "and me", I have officially accepted that there is no hope!

I recently saw a video of Prince Willy and Kate where she got it wrong, so what hope is there for anyone else?! 😭

Tiktok and Instagram is also full of people saying "look at my husband and I's new house/car/airfryer". If we're now commonly using "I's" then we're all doomed!

For those who are unsure..
"Bob and I went by bus" = correct because if you remove Bob, "I went by bus" is still correct .
"The bus ran over Bob and I" = incorrect because if you remove Bob, "The bus ran over I" is incorrect
.
An easy way to remember it is that you should use "I" when you are doing something but use "me" when it is being done to you.
Your welcome!

You're

Paranormalblue · 17/09/2025 11:41

I can’t tell if you said you’re welcome incorrectly on purpose

Ballywas · 17/09/2025 11:42

You’re welcome.

StrangerOnline · 17/09/2025 11:47

I knew the difference with me and I - think I normally get it correct…
and I am definitely a part-time pedant, in that some errors really really irritate me (eg/ their, they’re & there) and others are no big deal.

But your post raised a question
What is the correct way of saying look at the new house then? I would cheat and say “look at OUR new house” to avoid getting it wrong 😄

Or surely it is “look at my husband’s and MY new house” ? (not me or I)

👍🏻🤣🤣🤣🤣

HollyBollyBooBoo · 17/09/2025 11:49

🤣🤣

StrangerOnline · 17/09/2025 11:50

And yes… was also unsure if the “YOUR welcome” error was intentional…?

Ignored it so I didn’t derail thread but that is one of my pet hates… it’s such an easy one!
Your = belong to
You’re = you are

HTH 😉

SavePlasticine · 17/09/2025 16:52

The correct English would be "my husband's and my house", but I think that sounds a bit weird so I would just say "our house".

I'm regretting not putting a winking emoji after "your welcome". Twas just a little joke for my fellow pedants!

Ahem...

'Twas.

I've been watching a DIY show with Mark Wright and he says this all the time.

'Our' would sound better anyway, I think.

I am intrigued by pendants. Why do you think these things bother you so much? I have friends who are pendants and I find I am on edge when I write a text to them. Being on edge makes me more likely to make mistakes.

I assume you’re making deliberate mistakes there, or are you really referring to jewellery?

This is Pedants' corner which is specifically for the purpose of being pedantic. Personally, I think the preservation and correct use of the language is important.
Coming on to this board and asking what the point of it is is like going on to The Litter Tray and saying you don't like pets or the TV thread and saying you don't watch television.

We were taught it was important.
There are times it impacts meaning.
Some slips may not matter, but several can cause confusion.

I overlook most, as in I simply don’t see them (‘pendants’).

Others derail me. DS used ‘witch’ instead of ‘which’ and my brain inserted a witch on a broom into a cowboy story.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 18/09/2025 08:46

@CaptainMyCaptain to be fair to @Slimtoddy, it’s more like asking litter tray people why they like cats.
Fair question.

MinnieMountain · 18/09/2025 08:47

I’m with you OP, but my DH doesn’t even get “and I” correct when it should be used.

Libre2 · 18/09/2025 08:51

Don’t accept defeat, OP. Keep on keeping on. I still correct my teens on this every time. I am hoping it will stick (before they do me in).

NebulousSadTimes · 18/09/2025 09:00

Perhaps that's why 'myself' is used so often nowadays, because people are unsure whether it should be I or me. "Give it to myself".

Bonden · 18/09/2025 09:33

Oh the use of “myself” is an abomination. It’s people trying to make themselves appear educated. It’s rather as though [note correct use of “as though”, so may (not can) I have extra brownie points please] a child has put on her mother’s shoes and now believes she is an adult.

PendantScorner · 18/09/2025 11:20

@SavePlasticine , your poor punctuation weakens your point. Perhaps you should avoid Tiktok and Instagram, or share the link to the video.

@Slimtoddy , I'm not intrigued by pendants.

This!!!!! I think both the use of "myself" and "and I" is people trying to sound educated. They think "me" doesn't sound clever enough.

I work in communications so people should be able to write, but I'm still known as the pedant I think. Once had a junior write to a client
"Myself and John will meet yourself and Bob..." Aaargh!

Musicaltheatremum · 18/09/2025 12:45

My husband wrote a letter and put "my wife and myself". !!! Once my brain had recovered from the insult of reading it I corrected him and told him never to use that word.

Ugh I feel ill just reading it

3pears · 18/09/2025 12:48

I see a lot of:

‘My husband and I’s house’.

I seem to find it mostly on Reddit and wonder if it’s an American thing?
