On a FB thread about someone with a child in crisis. I don’t think it’s a typo.

OP posts:

Given this is a thread I started, I will accept “aww” in the right context. What I absolutely will not accept and see even from people I thought were educated, is “awe”. “Awe” is not an expression of surprise, solidarity and so on. I deplore the cue/queue/que one as noted above but nice pic of puppy or kitten with “awe” posted makes me want to cry.

I don't understand what happened to 'ahhh' anyway, as an expression of admiration for something lovely and/or sweet. Aww isn't 'ahhh' and is annoying.

@7372RR , now that is not the attitude of a pedant, is it? Write that email. Before you press Send, remind them that 'comprises of' is incorrect.

The website should use plain English.

Write to whoever is responsible for dealing with complaints about neighbours’ noisy dogs.Grin

Over 60 years ago, at school, one of my friends would jump on us if we said "different to". "FROM", she would say. So I can't possibly think that 'aw' or 'aww' or 'awe' are different to 'oh'.

upinaballoon · 29/08/2025 16:30

Some people are just too young to have ever heard the story, which may not be true, about John Wayne, when he was playing the centurion at Christ's crucifixion. They shot the scene when he says, "Truly this was the Son of God". The director asked for a re-shoot and asked John for a bit more awe, so JW said, "Aw, truly this was the Son et cetera....."

It's an old one. I'll get my coat.

The quote to get the joke exactly right is ‘say it with awe’ iircGrin. (Pedantry in all things!Grin)

Just seen rest bite as two words.

Thanks. I've never been good at telling jokes. It makes sense - with awe.
I'm in awe of your accuracy.

Mistyglade · 31/08/2025 20:20

Is that what happens after frostbite?

Mistyglade · 31/08/2025 20:22

TeacheeTeacherson · 29/08/2025 00:05

My new favourite on here recently was when the OP said ‘it’s like Jaqueline High’ and went on to explain that that means when a person acts differently in different situations.

😳😭

I still find it ugly and inelegant, and it isn't a word.
I'm not averse to the correct use of literally, but when it literally appears in literally every thread, like I am literally doing here, I literally get sick of it.
I've also seen actual threads where the actual poster uses the actual word actual too often.
Someone I know really feels the same about really. I really really sympathise with her.
Smile

Are you sure you don’t mean ‘adverse’? 😆 That’s another one regularly trotted out…

The coffee shop in our local community hospital used to be (maybe still is?) called 'Restbite' - and it was branded and styled in such a way as to suggest that it may have been one of a chain!

I've no idea whether it was done as a deliberate ironic pun by a MNer who frequents Pedants' Corner or somebody genuinely, mentally working backwards, believed that was how you actually spell respite and thought they'd spotted something really clever?!

Surely it's just a pun, like a cafe called Just Desserts?

I apologise-me again. But someone on our local Facebook has done something terribly kind. There are lots of messages praising this woman who I’m sure is lovely.

it seems she is, and I quote, “a pillow of our local community”. Yes, really.

That’s a rather nice concept. Someone who comforts and supports. Grin

Awww means "that's a pity". Different from admiration.

PendantScorner · 04/09/2025 23:59

Do Aww and Awww mean the same thing?

Objectrelations · 05/09/2025 01:06

I think ‘restbite’ sounds like having something to eat whilst I put off doing something that makes me anxious..

persianfairyfloss · 05/09/2025 01:40

Pillow of our community is fantastic. I love it!
