On a FB thread about someone with a child in crisis. I don’t think it’s a typo.

OP posts:
PendantScorner · 29/08/2025 06:30

Where did aww come from? Why not use oh?

I get annoyed at the tenses of verbs being misused.
An example: My washing machine has finally bit the dust

PendantScorner · 29/08/2025 06:41

Not a typo, but the word literally irritates me. It adds nothing unless it is used correctly.
I find it detracts from the meaning of the sentence.

TeacheeTeacherson · 29/08/2025 00:05

My new favourite on here recently was when the OP said ‘it’s like Jaqueline High’ and went on to explain that that means when a person acts differently in different situations.

🤣🤣😦

What’s puzzling about ‘aww’? It’s a different interjection to ‘oh’, literally a written representation of a sound made in response to something cute or touching, unlike ‘oh’ which conveys a different emotion e.g. surprise.

(i hope you find my use of ‘literally’ acceptable in the above!Grin)

PendantScorner · 29/08/2025 07:07

It adds nothing, @ErrolTheDragon .

I don't like 'aww', and find it ugly and inelegant, and I don't see it as being different in meaning to 'oh'.
Oh doesn't necessarily indicate surprise.

’literally’ adds emphasis that it’s an equivalence. But anyway, it doesn’t matter whether you happen to like ‘aww’ as a word, it is representing in letters as accurately as possible the sound someone is making, as is the case for other interjections. Interjections are not as fixed as other words - ugh, urgh, urghhh giving increased levels of revulsion, for instance. I’d guess ‘aww’ arose from people’s response to cute internet memes etc - whether you like it or not, it exists and really is quite distinct from the more standard, generic ‘oh’.

TripTrapSnipSnap · 29/08/2025 07:57

'Aww' is very different to 'oh' and it's perfectly fine to have a spelling that reflects that particular sound as accurately as possible.

SummerFrog25 · 29/08/2025 08:03

Theoscargoesto · 28/08/2025 23:09

Eh wallah?? Please say you haven’t really seen that, not in real life? Christ on a bike.

You clearly don't spend very much time on MN

PendantScorner · 29/08/2025 08:05

I still find it ugly and inelegant, and it isn't a word.
I'm not averse to the correct use of literally, but when it literally appears in literally every thread, like I am literally doing here, I literally get sick of it.
I've also seen actual threads where the actual poster uses the actual word actual too often.
Someone I know really feels the same about really. I really really sympathise with her.

That's your opinion.

aww awww awwww
indicates it's 'cute' not a surprise.

Who are you reminding?

Theoscargoesto · 29/08/2025 08:22

Given this is a thread I started, I will accept “aww” in the right context. What I absolutely will not accept and see even from people I thought were educated, is “awe”. “Awe” is not an expression of surprise, solidarity and so on. I deplore the cue/queue/que one as noted above but nice pic of puppy or kitten with “awe” posted makes me want to cry.

The W and the E next to each other on keyboards so when you type so ‘awe’ could just be a typo.

PendantScorner · 29/08/2025 08:31

Maybe awe is an autocorrection of aww.

TripTrapSnipSnap · 29/08/2025 08:38

Yes it's probably autocorrect. It constantly 'corrects' my it's/its as well, which I never get wrong; if I don't really watch it I find it's changed by the time I post. Absolutely infuriating!

HeinzTomato · 29/08/2025 08:51

I rather like "restbite". It reminds me of when my daughter was little and used to describe scary things as "terror-fighting" (so scary you had to fight your terror) rather then "terrifying". It's not the word but it sort of should be.

CheeseWisely · 29/08/2025 09:01

I’ve just come across a new (to me) one that I assume is someone mishearing and not giving it a millisecond’s thought. Mention of her daughter wearing a ‘hammydown’ dress. Erm…

I’m an offender on actually/really, though I do try to curb the tendency. It’s something I check for and edit out in work emails.

I see 'draws' more than I see 'drawers' now. If I see 'drawers' correctly used I want to go and hug the user.

Our council's Home Choice website often tells us that pets are "aloud" in some places. I would send them an email about it, but I can't be bothered as doubt it'll get to the right person.
