On a FB thread about someone with a child in crisis. I don’t think it’s a typo.

Pacifically so they can get some rest.

TripTrapSnipSnap · 16/08/2025 12:16

That's one of the ones that almost makes a kind of sense so I can understand why they think it's that.

Catpiece · 16/08/2025 12:20

It makes no sense. It’s just trotting out a mishearing

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 16/08/2025 12:21

I see “restbite” more often than respite, especially on here. I’m surprised you haven’t.

PuppyMonkey · 16/08/2025 12:23

I think this is quite sweet actually.

Catpiece · 16/08/2025 12:23

I have seen it on here. It’s appalling.

SprayWhiteDung · 16/08/2025 12:25

The coffee shop in our local community hospital used to be (maybe still is?) called 'Restbite' - and it was branded and styled in such a way as to suggest that it may have been one of a chain!

I've no idea whether it was done as a deliberate ironic pun by a MNer who frequents Pedants' Corner or somebody genuinely, mentally working backwards, believed that was how you actually spell respite and thought they'd spotted something really clever?!

The 'rest' bit makes sense; but why the 'bite' - if you're just referring to a break from responsibilities without food or vampirism specifically involved?

You see it alot?!

HansHolbein · 16/08/2025 12:29

I was about to challenge you on that title.

TripTrapSnipSnap · 16/08/2025 12:31

A 'bite' of rest, is what I'm thinking. A small chunk of rest in a life of relentless stress.

Don't get me wrong - I don't like it one bit, but it's just about forgivable. There are others that also make a certain kind of sense (can't remember any now) and I also find them less annoying.

It's an eggcorn!

I have not seen it before and hope not to see it again!

Maybe they want some time to organise the chester draws….

There's a second-hand furniture shop in a town where I used to live called Chester Drawer's!

I presume they must have done it on purpose, as if they genuinely believed that to be the name for one specific kind of furniture, why would they deliberately make it sound so limited when they sell all kinds of furniture?!

It would then also be an oddly boring shop name, too: like just calling your shop 'Wardrobes' or 'Dining Chairs'.

Edited to add: the town is nowhere near Chester, where I concede the unwittingly-used pun might have made a lot more sense!

MsMiniver · 16/08/2025 20:19

It doesn’t phase me.

soupyspoon · 16/08/2025 20:22

Yes its an eggcorn, one of my favourites actually.

I see it a lot (alot) at work as we use respite a lot, it drives me mad.

childofthe607080s · 16/08/2025 20:23

a bite of rest or a byte of rest in that case ?

It makes no sense, unless they are planning to get bitten as they are resting.

This one drives me round the bend. It's so daft.

'Dinning chairs' surely?

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/08/2025 17:33

They could of and should of used the right word.

a bite of rest or a byte of rest in that case ?

There are 8 reasons why that’s wrong.

PendantScorner · 24/08/2025 14:53

You should be aloud restbite?

Anna20MFG · 24/08/2025 15:07

It's usually typed by someone at their wits end with exhaustion so I try and give it a pass.

Some of the others though...

Titasaducksarse · 24/08/2025 15:15

Lol. I organise 'restbite' as part of my job. It always makes me smile when I get an email asking me for it but carers call it this too! I don't even think anything of this now.
