to say "Ask" not flippin "Arks" or even worse "Arksk" as in "I've arksk you already" I suppose it was Eastenders lol, but you hear it in the street all the time and it really winds me up

Depends how old you are. It's cute in a 3 year old

hullygully · 26/05/2008 20:27

And have you noticed that they are rarely Caucasian? Insult to injury.

Monkeytrousers · 26/05/2008 20:33

Not where I'm from HG

FruitynNutty · 26/05/2008 20:39

It came out of Chelsea's mouth [grrrrrr]

is it not a West Indian thing though ?

FruitynNutty · 26/05/2008 20:48

is it? I'm sure Caucasian's say it too Maybe it originated from the West Indies then. Just blardy annoying! Surely it's easier to say it properly?

I thought this was pedant's corner? "Caucasian's"???

edam · 26/05/2008 20:51

Um, that should be caucasians, plural, not caucasian's! (I wouldn't have said anything, but this is Pedants' Corner!)

hullygully · 26/05/2008 20:52

Quite.

Janni · 26/05/2008 20:56

I'm pretty sure it's a West Indian pronunciation which has been taken up by white kids wanting to sound 'street'.

I distinctly remember the black children at secondary school (1980's) being the only ones who said 'aks'.

FruitynNutty · 26/05/2008 20:57

pmsl! I was so caught up in "arks" I forgot about my own spelling lol

OP posts:
MargaretMountford · 26/05/2008 21:02

what Janni said

hullygully · 26/05/2008 21:04

Quite. Again.

Janni · 26/05/2008 21:08

Hullygully - Pedants' Corner.

Only on this thread would I ever dare reposition someone's apostrophe.

hullygully · 26/05/2008 21:10

Doesn't it only belong to one pedant? On the other hand, the words "petard" and "hoisted" come sadly and swiftly to mind..

FruitynNutty · 26/05/2008 21:12

you mean to say I'm not the only one who isn't perfect?

OP posts:
hullygully · 26/05/2008 21:21

Just one, one, errant little apostrophe and one's perfection comes crashing down around one's ears.

hullygully · 26/05/2008 21:21

Twice.

FruitynNutty · 26/05/2008 21:28

bluewolf · 26/05/2008 21:30

I thought it was a clever anagram.

Janni · 26/05/2008 21:30

Not for nothing is Pedants' Corner known as 'Extreme Mumsnetting' - you put your neck on the line every time.

hullygully · 26/05/2008 21:40

I am thinking of calling my new baby Pedantia Corneria. Honest opinions please.

Monkeytrousers · 26/05/2008 21:47

sounds like an eye disorder

Janni · 26/05/2008 22:11

I like it.
Pedantus Cornerus would be nice for a boy.
