Que?

No, not quoting Manuel, but 🥴 at the number of posters on here that use ‘que’ for ‘queue’. Yesterday, someone had further Manuel-ed it up by adding an accent, ‘qué’ when they actually meant queue.

Does it not just look wrong? I just don’t get it.

Some people are dyslexic so it won't look wrong to them no.

AgentProvocateur · 09/10/2023 10:45

They usually use it when they mean “cue”, eg “Cue the pedants posting on the thread.” It’s a ridiculous word, and I’ve only seen it used like this on MN.

JaneJeffer · 09/10/2023 11:11

I usually see it used for cue as well.

Que?
KateMiddletonsExtensions · 09/10/2023 14:34

I see it on MN, Facebook and forums and it's ridiculously incorrect!

ItsCueNotQue · 09/10/2023 14:37

This phenomenon inspired a previous namechange of mine, which these days only gets resurrected to post on threads like these Grin

Flyinggeesei234 · 10/10/2023 11:36

OP, like @AgentProvocateur I tend to see it in place of ‘cue’. It’s distracting.

Excellent!

Maybe I’ll create a sister username ‘ItsQueuenotQue’

I'm new here. Are you actually allowed to use the dyslexia argument in Pedants Corner?

Bbq1 · 12/10/2023 08:23

Don't loose your mind over it... my pet hate when the poster means lose.

Que is easier on the eye than NOONE 😖

Grin

(As usual, I had to google that one as for some reason I'm never confident about the right spelling ...)

Missedmytoe · 12/10/2023 08:31

I see this where people mean 'cue', and vice versa. They tend to be those same people who use 'tow the line'.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 12/10/2023 08:33

I see que everywhere. In place of both cue and queue. It drives me absolutely bloody mad!

SiobhanSharpe · 12/10/2023 08:34

@JaneJeffer I love the Language Guru How to English tip.
Succinct and useful.

On a similar thread recently, someone mentioned seeing skate goat. I love this! It makes just as much sense these days, i.e. very little, as the real word.

SylvieLaufeydottir · 12/10/2023 09:03

I saw the Economist get 'free rein' wrong yesterday. That depressed me.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/10/2023 09:08

Bloody Oliver Bonas had a sign in the window offering a 'sneak peak' at some items. I did wonder how many people saw that and signed it off before it was merrily sent out to hundreds of shops.

I saw a poster from Network rail with a grocer's apostrophe in it the other day. It's depressing.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/10/2023 09:11

My own husband, who I love to death says 'edge your bets' and 'exasperate' instead of exacerbate despite me telling him multiple times. I just leave well enough alone now. If those are the only things about him that annoy me then I'm doing alright. < quietly puts rolling pin back in drawer>

The image in my head🤣🤣🤣 My goat is skateboarding rather than roller skating ...

The one that drives me to distraction is ADVANCED NOTICE.

@LadyOfTheCanyon I recently contacted Sweaty Betty to tell them they’d done this in an email. It’s a common one.

Flyinggeesei234 · 12/10/2023 10:59

Here it is. I told them good and proper!

Flyinggeesei234 · 12/10/2023 11:01
