These made me think of the quiz question "how many lakes are there in the Lake District?". The answer is 1 (Bassenthwaite Lake); the other 15 are meres or waters.

It's interesting how many on that list are Native American names. I live in a state with many Native American names, especially rivers. In common speech and even often in writing, no one every says "river." They just use the Native American word alone.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/07/2023 12:58

I don't think we usually do use the word 'river' when we're talking about them though, whether their names are tautological or not. 'Shall we go for a walk along the Ribble or the Lune today?'

The Times annoyed me yesterday by referring to a house in “the Teesdale valley”.
Dale means valley! So the house was in a valley valley?

There is one in a trending thread today. "It's hardly mass genocide".

Well hermetically sealed still annoys me even if not a tautology. Maybe cos the sealing is implied in the hermetically?

Hermetically, without the sealed, would have to read hermeticced then? They hermeticced the container? Doesn't work.

I, myself, (think...)

Polar opposite

I, myself, think polar opposite just indicates the degree of opposite-ness. 😬

One can be armed with something other than a gun.

One can be but a gunman will be armed by definition.

Edited to say - Ignore me. This thread came up in my feed and I just realised after posting that it is an old thread.

Nope, it's Muphry.

I know. I was just illustrating the point. Hence, "I'll see myself out"😎
