On the back of the schedule thread - Help a non native speaker

I know a guy who used to feel very 'posh' when saying 'isue' and 'tisue' and he would repeat the 'correct' spelling after ppl used the sh version

I've also heard someone saying 'nurshery' (nursery)

OP posts:

Definitely don't pronounce the 'h'

Lastnamedidntstick · 11/03/2023 21:59

I say ishue and tishue.

no h In nursery- there’s no ss.

upinaballoon · 12/03/2023 22:16

I say ishue, tishue, nursery. Native English.

ImCrunchyOnTheOutside · 12/03/2023 22:18

Ishue tishue nursery

Dotcheck · 12/03/2023 22:18

I say ishue and tishue

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/03/2023 22:19

Do you mean like ishoo and iss-you?

most people sound like wankers when they say iss-you, no?

Sux2buthen · 12/03/2023 22:24

Ugh yes like the people that say 'appre see ate'

LadyWithLapdog · 12/03/2023 22:30

I think iss-you sounds pretentious. As does appreCEEate. Also restoran’ for restaurant.

oddUsername · 12/03/2023 22:30

I always assumed it was pronounced tissue because you say a tissue when you sneeze?

mynameiscalypso · 12/03/2023 22:33

I have an irrational hatred of the 'iss yoo' pronunciation. It makes my skin crawl.

BubziOwl · 12/03/2023 22:36

I neither know nor care whether it's correct or not, but every time someone says "iss-you" I like them a little bit less.

teezletangler · 12/03/2023 22:38

It's not quite as bad as the "seksssss-ual" pronunciation for sexual. Truly skin crawling.

LadyWithLapdog · 12/03/2023 22:49

Stop it! So revolting!

LakeTiticaca · 12/03/2023 22:59

I say ishue and tishue but I have no problem with those who say it the other way.
Got better things to do 😉

So you can’t got no iss-yoo with tiss-yoo?

I agree. restoran' sounds particularly pretentious imo.

Giggorata · 13/03/2023 01:47

Ish in every case, I think.
but I don't pronounce the last t in restaurant because it sounds wrong to me. Like saying RenALLt instead of Ren-o.

Yes!

I'm always reminded of Brian Sewell when I think off iss-yoo and tiss-yoo and especially sekssssss-ual.

My skin also crawls. Bleurgh.

Ish-oo and tish-oo for me thank you very much.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2023 02:50

Ishoo, tishoo, nursery.

I think iss-u sounds a bit old fashioned and affected.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2023 02:52

I think app-ree-cee-ate and neg-o-cee-ate are perfectly fine though.

BritInAus · 13/03/2023 05:23

Never ever heard 'nusery' pronounced with a SH sounds.

ISH-oo / ISS-yew and TISH-oo / TISS-yew are both generally accepted.

Nursery with a 'shh' sound is very, very wrong - not a matter of accent/taste.

RebeccaCloud9 · 13/03/2023 05:39

Wanky politicians say iss you and tiss you but not many other people.

I'd have bopped him on the nose if he'd 'corrected' me.

WhenDovesFly · 13/03/2023 10:27

Lots of us also say vej-table instead of veg-eh-ta-ble. It's just preferred pronunciation, or laziness, one or the other 😁

LadyWithLapdog · 13/03/2023 10:30

There’s also FebYOUary February, although I suspect the YOU is the correct one.
