Do you say lavatory, loo or toilet?

I continue to say the two former terms, although most people in Australia would only say the latter or 'dunny' or 'toot'.
What do you say and does it depend on the company you are in?

Loo and doesn't matter what company I'm in

countryhousehotel · 01/01/2008 08:46

Apparently toilet is common! according to my dh and those of my friends who attended posh English public schools. I would use loo or toilet (dead common, me) never lavatory.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 01/01/2008 09:14

Always loo.

MacavitysCat · 01/01/2008 09:16

Loo. The other words make me wince, especially "toilet". My frightfully posh mil says lavatory.

needmorecoffee · 01/01/2008 09:26

toilet. Guess that makes me common. Surely saying 'loo' is common?
When I lived in the US we had to learn to say 'bathroom' as they'd faint dead away if you said 'toilet'.

Boogalooblue · 01/01/2008 09:34

Loo, anything else just isn't acceptable

PeachesMcLean · 01/01/2008 09:38

If you ask for the loos somewhere posh like The Ritz the staff say "the Ladies' Powder Room is that way" with a really "I'm correcting you" tone of voice.

ALomonderfulLife · 01/01/2008 09:53

Loo most of the time, if asking dd I say toilet.

08aGreatYearForCarmenere · 01/01/2008 09:56

Toilet.

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/01/2008 09:58

I say lav or loo, ds says toilet, which I don't like but what can you do ?

RGPargy · 01/01/2008 10:00

Loo most of the time.

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 01/01/2008 10:03

I interchange between loo and toilet.
Doesn't matter what company I'm in - no idea what affects my choice.

DumbledoreWithBoughsOfHolly · 01/01/2008 10:04

I use all three at various times. I have no idea what determines my use.

TooTicky · 01/01/2008 10:07

I was brought up with loo - now tend to say toilet because dp says loo is a girls' word so I got self conscious about it.

turquoise · 01/01/2008 10:08

Loo. Got into the habit of 'bathroom' a bit when living in the US - loo mystifies them.

moljam · 01/01/2008 10:14

HappyBiglipsYear · 01/01/2008 10:19

toilet....

sometimes loo

Tommy · 01/01/2008 10:30

I think I say loo most of the time but, thinking about it, say toilet when I'm talking to children - no idea why - I think I must have used toilet when I was training them.

Never use lavvatory.

If I'm in a restaurant or whatever, I still ask for "the ladies"
