I wrote "could have", he informed me it should be "could of".

Think he was trying to be clever 🤣.

@Wallywobbles

Îd send something like this.

Choose the correct reason:

a) could of because it's correct
b) could of because I was joking
c) could of because I'm 5
d) could of because I like to mansplain regardless of the superior knowledge of the other party
e) could of for some other reason that I don't need to know.

This one is my favourite !
Freshprincess · 21/01/2022 17:18

Grin well played.

QueenPeony · 21/01/2022 17:32

Love it OP!

Babdoc · 21/01/2022 17:41

20 years ago, when DD was at high school, she briefly had an American teacher for English.
DD wrote an essay, including the sentence: “He jumped off the rock.”
The American teacher put her red pen through it and wrote firmly “off of the rock”!

I was horrified, but fortunately the school’s Head of English turned up as a patient in my operating theatre that week, so we had a useful conversation about her colleague, and the problem of US versus British English!

Not yet. I'm giving him the chance to show me he was joking, although I'm not holding my breath 😂.

This thread is really entertaining. Well done OP! 😂

Block the bastard!!

How does 'l' stand for 'the'?

Is that the continental version that they use on Reseaudesmamans? Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/01/2022 23:52

What will you do if he answers 'a tallboy'?!

as in 'you have no chance with me a tallboy!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/01/2022 23:53

I missed off the closing inverted comma - in PC!

ToooOldForThis · 21/01/2022 23:57

Slightly off topic...but "off of" is very common where I am in Scotland!

I cannot see how it could be a joke. He sounds like a knob

Jewel1968 · 22/01/2022 09:17

If it is a joke it isn't very funny so either way you are well rid. Correcting grammar or spelling in a social setting is inappropriate at best, dickish at worst.

QueenPeony · 22/01/2022 10:39

It could be a joke but what are the chances of finding a man on OLD who’s a magnificent pedant with bone-dry humour? Probably smaller than getting hit by a meteorite, but like OP I’d have to check.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 20/02/2022 08:38

So, what did he say OP?

coodawoodashooda · 20/02/2022 08:40

Like pp said. Please ask him what he means.

Ra12345 · 20/02/2022 08:47

Are you sure he didn't mean 'yeah you could of stayed longer' and just shortened it to 'could of'. Did he actually say 'you should've written could of'?

Bangheadhere40 · 21/02/2022 18:12

Is it have or of?

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 22/02/2022 20:43

@Bangheadhere40

Is it have or of?
It's have! NEVER of after could, would or should. Op please tell us how it went!
