I wrote "could have", he informed me it should be "could of".

Think he was trying to be clever 🤣.

Oof, I hate people correcting other people’s grammar (outside a teaching situation)- always the mark of an insecure arsehole and often wrong to boot (as here). The correcting would put me off much more than the error.

Kuachui · 20/01/2022 09:29

could of is literally wrong though... My auntie always gets annoyed at that one as she teaches english lit at university and says its a common mistake haha

whatmagicword · 20/01/2022 09:33

COULD HAVE IS CORRECT!
You should never use could of. It is a mistake by careless writers that results from a misunderstanding of spoken English. Since could have is a verb phrase, and of is preposition, you will always know to use could have as long as you can remember the parts of speech of have and of.

Someone has already posted exactly that.Grin

It would have been inappropriate enough in that scenario if he'd corrected your wrong grammar; but as the old saying goes, 'there are none as stupid as those who don't know they're stupid'!

I'm baffled too as to why so many people think 'could of' is correct. How could it possibly be? Do they only ever communicate verbally and never written?

'I have done something' is easily-understandable English. Add in the conditional 'could' and it simply becomes 'I could have done something'. I'll bet not one of these people would ever dream of saying or writing 'I of done something' - so why on earth would the addition of 'could' mean that the 'have' randomly changes to 'of'?

It's the same with the very common misuse of 'and I'. Nobody would ever say "why don't you visit I?" so why do they think that the addition of another person - "Why don't you visit my husband and I?" - makes it correct? Some people seem to think that 'me' is somehow a lower, less-correct word; it isn't at all - you just need to use it in the correct place!

Ginandplatonic · 20/01/2022 09:37

Well he’s done you a favour. Just not in the way he thinks…

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/01/2022 09:38

That said, it sounds like he has indeed properly corrected you in one thing: any notion you may have had that he was worth persevering with!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/01/2022 09:39

X-posted with Ginandplatonic !

Loving the people explaining that "could have" is corret given the OP clearly knows that Grin

LublinToDublin · 20/01/2022 09:40

Correct obviously 🤣

It's could have. As in 'you could have got to go on a date with me if your grammar weren't shit'

Has the bonus of subjunctive too :-)

We're not explaining to OP - we're vicariously screaming at the numpties who don't know Grin

Ooh, I would have had a field day with this.

I got a random message on Pinterest of all places, clearly a chancer as he was suspect from the start. I kept the conversation going (I was obviously bored at the time), but I only replied in song lyrics.

He didn't seem to realize, he then asked me do I think I am funny or what..... and then blocked me! I did not even get the chance to say, yes I think I am hilarious.

I haven't responded yet (or blocked him) because I thought you lovely, pedantic lot, may have some stellar responses for me to send. Thank you! I'll respond to him this evening 😁.

Gah.

My family member, a school teacher, writes 'could of' every single time.

BaronessBomburst · 20/01/2022 10:34

Place marking for the update! Grin

And now I'm panicking; is it placemarking, place-marking, or place marking?
And I've started a sentence with a conjunction.
Twice.

VanGoghsDog · 20/01/2022 10:39

"I could have written could of but it would of been wrong"

LindaEllen · 20/01/2022 10:40

I'd correct him back, send him a link that explains his mistake and tell him to fuck off.

And I'm not usually a rude person.

ProudThrilledHappy · 20/01/2022 10:42

I would just have to reply “No” and block. I don’t think I could proceed to date someone who not only tried to correct me but was also wrong in the first place.

sociallydistained · 20/01/2022 10:44

We need to know your response and his please 😂

PoshWatchShitShoes · 20/01/2022 10:46

I'd reply:

Haha you're hilarious..."of" replacing "have" as a new verb??! My friend just wrote about her chester drawers 😂
