Tinder match just corrected my grammar

I wrote "could have", he informed me it should be "could of".

Think he was trying to be clever 🤣.

Are there still books on English Grammar? I think 'could of' is bad.

I'm baffled too as to why so many people think 'could of' is correct.

In my accent that is exactly how it sounds "cud ov". I didn't learn the correct grammar until A Levels. Mind you, in my accent wouldn't is pronounced "wunt" and shouldn't is pronounced "shunt". I sometimes wonder if my colleagues have noticed my couldn'ts, but it dunt bear thinking about.

I'm famed for my pedantry, but I can kind of understand why people think it's "could of". It sounds like that when most people say it, and while "could have" is right, it doesn't really make any more sense when you break it down.

It's one of those things where I wonder if it will actually become that over time.

A friend was telling me that her son corrected the grammar of an online match. He is an English teacher and couldn't help himself.

I can see why it would annoy and irritate but.......

I never did find out if she blocked him. I must ask!!

It’s either a joke, in which case all is well, or it’s not, in which case his grammar is awful and his correcting you is worse.

So reply as if it’s a joke and see what happens.

The bottom line is never shag anyone who's not au fait with their grammar. Ever.

I like this reply. Well actually I’d add some quotation marks to clarify it’s incorrect usage: "I could have written ‘could of’ but it ‘would of’ been wrong.”

If he was joking, then he’d hopefully come back with a 🤣🤣🤣 reaction. Still makes his sense of humour a bit suspect though.

If he wasn’t joking, it puts him firmly in his place.

I'm a massive grammar pedant, but even I think correcting someone correctly in that context is grounds for gentle withdrawal because that person is a knobhead. Correcting someone wrongly?
