I wrote "could have", he informed me it should be "could of".

Think he was trying to be clever 🤣.

@PartyOnKale

Not being able to spell is fine but the correcting is not a good sign.
It's nothing to do with spelling, it's grammar.
CaptainMyCaptain · 20/01/2022 12:08

@NatashaBedwouldbenice

I'm baffled too as to why so many people think 'could of' is correct.

In my accent that is exactly how it sounds "cud ov". I didn't learn the correct grammar until A Levels. Mind you, in my accent wouldn't is pronounced "wunt" and shouldn't is pronounced "shunt". I sometimes wonder if my colleagues have noticed my couldn'ts, but it dunt bear thinking about.

Children in my class used to spell 'couldn't' like that, but they were only 5 and it was phonetically plausible in their accent. I just quietly told them the correct spelling.
MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 12:16

What a dunderhead. Assuming he's not joking, you'd almost feel embarrassed for him.

But I'd also block someone who corrected my incorrect grammar. Because acting the know-it-all, before we've even met, ain't gonna loosen my knicker elastic.

DoYouWantDecking · 20/01/2022 12:19

@VanGoghsDog

"I could have written could of but it would of been wrong"
this! Star

I do hope he was joking and it didn't translate

tinkywinkyshandbag · 20/01/2022 12:31

Well he's corrected in incorrectly so that would be a no from me!

Shannith · 20/01/2022 12:32

Just reply I could of gone on a date with you...

ClariceQuiff · 20/01/2022 12:38

Even if your grammar had been incorrect, leaping to correct it at such an early stage in your acquaintanceship would 'of' been inappropriate.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/01/2022 12:42

@FanGirlX

😂 At least you won’t have to dither about whether to bin that one!
Queenoftheashes · 20/01/2022 12:47

Get him to explain his reasoning. Someone did this to me on Facebook with bear/bare. I pretended not to understand what they meant while they dug in and then I posted the definition. She was embarrassed… it was funny. But I didn’t know what else I could do but let it unfold.
Anyway I think she deleted me at some stage.

Bitbloweyoutthere · 20/01/2022 12:55

Should post:
Could have
And see if he responds again with
Could of

Until one of you actually cracks

Snuggleworm · 20/01/2022 12:58

He would give me the biggest ick ever and would be blocked immediately.
"Could of" is incorrect. And the fact that he corrected your correct grammar is just so embarassing for him. I am actually cringing for him. He is going to be mortified when he knows he is inthe wrong.
Also, how rude of him to even correct you in the firt place. Twat!

Sally872 · 20/01/2022 13:00

Looking forward to hear how this goes!! I can't believe he would correct you even if wrong. I would never correct spelling or grammar unless asked or if noticed on an important form/cv etc.

I would absolutely tell this guy though as his correction is incorrect. Enjoy!

Yaya26 · 20/01/2022 13:04

Stupid, pompous and lacking manners - throw him back.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/01/2022 13:04

It is bad enough that he corrected you, but to correct it wrongly is unforgivable. I am thankful I am married to someone as pedantic as me about grammar!

stmw321 · 20/01/2022 13:04

Hahahaha that's so funny

@Ionlydomassiveones

Oh I would LOVE this. His high minded arrogance is the perfect excuse to toy with him…

Say

‘Thanks for the grammar lesson. I couldnt’f wished for better advice. I could’f googled it but I realise that when a man mansplains to you, that I could’f got it wrong, then that’s me told. This ‘could of’ been the start of a beautiful relationship but I’m afraid I’m fussy about men correcting me when they’re actually completely and utterly wrong (and potentially a bit thick). Thanks for the laugh though’
Block

This is actually a perfect response

Farrandau · 20/01/2022 13:16

My first assumption would have been that he was joking, but maybe I'm being far too generous...?

OP, I would ask him which item of furniture he keeps his socks and underwear in, and if he replies 'My chester draws -- why do you ask???' then take out a hit on him.

DillDanding · 20/01/2022 13:17

Lucky escape.

He’s either trying to be funny, or is actually as thick as a plank.

autienotnaughty · 20/01/2022 13:20

Not read all the messages so apologies if already said, but the correct sentence is 'would have'. Because you would like to not could like to.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/01/2022 13:22

Ask him for the complete declension of the verb "to of".

Brilliant! That would probably be pearls before swine, though.

Incidentally, is there a verb 'to incorrect'? There should be for cases like this!

SirGawain · 20/01/2022 13:31

Tell him about the things you seen on your holiday.

SirGawain · 20/01/2022 13:34

Alternatively you could Tell him about the things you seen on you're holiday.

UniversalAunt · 20/01/2022 13:42

Dodge that bullet.
