Swap it ‘out’
Fry it ‘off’

And also ‘works do’ - surely it’s just work do?

Tell me I’m not the only one (and I bet there are more).

The reason why

@biggirlknickers

Out out
But surely "out out" is different to "out"?!
User310 · 31/10/2021 11:34

‘ n that’ after a sentence.

For me 'swap it out' and 'swap it' are different meanings, slightly and 'fry it off' indicates a certain amount of frying. Usually a quick fry on a high temperature, in a pan not a chip pan. The way you would fry spices for a curry.

As for a works do, surely it is a work's do?

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 31/10/2021 11:51

'hence' randomly stuck in a sentence so people feel like they're using superior language.

MrsFin · 31/10/2021 11:55

Pre-order, pre-book: you can't post-order or post-book, you can only order or book something in advance.

MrsFin · 31/10/2021 11:56

"OUT out" and "out" mean different things. "OUT out" must have one of the outs in capitals though.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/10/2021 11:58

Real leather. It's either leather or it isn't. The same for genuine antique. It's either an antique or it isn't.

Fair point. (Or italics.)
FuzzyPuffling · 31/10/2021 12:00

"Box set".
Surely it's "Boxed set" as it is not a set of boxes?

PlausibleSuit · 31/10/2021 12:00

Most of these don’t bother me personally.

English is a magpie of a language, and it’s one of the most fluid and flexible in terms of new terms and expressions being added. (Which is what makes it so difficult to learn.)

If we policed every tiny infraction I wonder if a lot of regional variation, and flexibility of expression, would be lost.

I’ve seen English posters have conniptions over expressions or phrases that are perfectly standard parlance here in Scotland, for example.

FuzzyPuffling · 31/10/2021 12:02

And for true pedants, I know, that's a different issue!

I know what you mean but I think this one’s useful. If I order the new Stuart MacBride book I expect to get it straight away, whereas a pre-order is a signal that the book isn’t released yet and what I've done is put my name down for it.

All warning is before the fact anyway, isn’t it?

I’ll let you have forewarn though, as it’s been around for so long.

Switch up. Switch out. Aargggh

Also, all the chummy euphemisms in diet talk, in which people are apparently afraid to admit that we all eat. “Reach for”, “grab”, “munch on”.

You mean eat.

Eat a biscuit, eat a cake, eat your knickers by mistake.
