Swap it ‘out’
Fry it ‘off’

And also ‘works do’ - surely it’s just work do?

Tell me I’m not the only one (and I bet there are more).

@MrsFin

Pre-order, pre-book: you can't post-order or post-book, you can only order or book something in advance.
I agree with you on pre-book. But pre-order has it’s uses and I can’t think of an alternative way to say what it means without using a lot more words. Pre-ordering is ordering something but knowing it won’t immediately be acted on. Pre-ordering a book before it’s released vs ordering a book that has already been released. Or in restaurants, if you have a large group and they ask you to pre-order the food. Any other way of phrasing that would still have the same issues, “ordering in advance” for example.

@Cuddlywaterfall....that's such a good one ! I wonder why they do that? Emphasis, perhaps? They should change it to...This is the last and final and I - will - not - tell - you - again...call! 🤣

Sleepinghyena · 31/10/2021 12:20

Now in a minute

pigsDOfly · 31/10/2021 12:38

'For free' and 'hence why' are the two that are currently annoying me.

sashh · 31/10/2021 12:52

One pre orders drinks for the interval at the theatre, ordering a drink is standing at the bar at the interval, personally I like to have my champagne waiting for me.
BootyMcBootFace · 31/10/2021 12:55

Global pandemic is a popular one at the moment

Firesidefox · 31/10/2021 12:57

Most of these don’t bother me personally.

Argh the 'personally' is redundant!

'Meet with' drives me mad. And I've noticed some of the younger people at work talking about 'replying back' to emails.

iNeedAteaPlease · 31/10/2021 12:59

@biggirlknickers

Out out
Out out is qualitatively different to out.
iNeedAteaPlease · 31/10/2021 13:01

@MrsFin

To pre-order means you are ordering something that isn’t yet available (album, book etc). To order something means it is immediately available for delivery.

Brand new
Broad daylight (saw that on the Guardian front page the other day Shock

New baby. Whoever heard of an old baby.

FuzzyPuffling · 31/10/2021 13:13

@BootyMcBootFace

Global pandemic is a popular one at the moment
Oh yes. This one winds me up. We now call it a "global, worldwide, everywhere, no escape pandemic"
AutumnAlmanack · 31/10/2021 13:13

'Revert back' seems to be gaining momentum!
'Off of' is just ugly
Also hate 'for free' and a new one which I had not hear before this week 'swim up'

ForensicAccountant · 31/10/2021 13:21

Over exaggerate

FlosCampi · 31/10/2021 13:25

Hence why

secretbookcase · 31/10/2021 13:47

@ClaudiusTheGod

Pre-warn

All warning is before the fact anyway, isn’t it?

I’ll let you have forewarn though, as it’s been around for so long.

Switch up. Switch out. Aargggh

But as with @PlausibleSuit's pre-ordering, the pre-warn determines time distance. If we go for a walk and before we set off I pre-warn you there's quicksand on a certain beach, you can avoid that beach altogether. But if we are walking on the beach already and I say, 'Hey, don't head in that direction! There's quicksand over there!' I'm warning you. It's quite a nice, subtle, temporal distinction.
RosesAndHellebores · 31/10/2021 13:50

Me myself

RosesAndHellebores · 31/10/2021 13:51

Or I myself

Cardboardeaux · 31/10/2021 13:52

"It's our 1-year anniversary". No, it's your anniversary, the "anni"bit already means "year"

Cardboardeaux · 31/10/2021 13:53

Another one that annoys me is "the back-end of last/next week". Wht nit just the "end"? Confused

VirgilStarkwell · 31/10/2021 13:55

The reason being is…

New and improved. It's either new or you have improved something that already exists (and therefore is not new)
