Swap it ‘out’
Fry it ‘off’

And also ‘works do’ - surely it’s just work do?

Tell me I’m not the only one (and I bet there are more).

On a slightly different note, but related, why do so many people seem to have difficulty distinguishing between "woman" and "women". So many times I see "a women" written (especially on MN) - they don't have the same problem with "man" and "men", so why is it so hard to get the right one?

"So I turns around and says" - Did you really? How odd. I usually have conversations without breakdancing at the same time.

Before streaming TV, to video a programme rather than record it (on a video recorder).

campion · 31/10/2021 14:15

@Firesidefox
I was going to say ' meet with' too, especially if it's followed by 'myself'.

@RosesAndHellebores 'I myself' is OK , I think, if you need to emphasise something eg a preference.

CooDeGrass · 31/10/2021 14:16

“Pick out” for “choose” (or just “pick!” Grin) seems to be suddenly everywhere

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/10/2021 14:17

@MrsFin

Pre-order, pre-book: you can't post-order or post-book, you can only order or book something in advance.
I would argue that this isn’t always the case. For example, I can go on Amazon and pre-order a book, before it is published, so I get it on the publication date, or I can wait until it is available, and order it.

Fry it off is different to fry it You can fry some chicken, but you couldn't fry it off. Fry it off is for things like the red wine you add to a pasta sauce after the mince. You fry it off- basically evaporate it off. It only works for liquids.

“These ones”
“I am writing to let you know”

EvilRingahBitch · 31/10/2021 14:43

@Cardboardeaux

"It's our 1-year anniversary". No, it's your anniversary, the "anni"bit already means "year"
"It's our anniversary" wouldn't tell you which anniversary it was. What I think you want them to say is "it's our first anniversary".
EvilRingahBitch · 31/10/2021 14:46

@RosesAndHellebores

New baby. Whoever heard of an old baby.
A ten month old child is a baby but isn't new. Unless it's the first time you've visited the parents since it was born, in which case you might say "I'm going to see X and their new baby" because it's new to you.

“These ones” “I am writing to let you know”
Hang on, what's wrong with, 'I am writing to let you know'?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pedants_corner/4383162-To-ask-where-this-stupid-phrase-has-come-from

There's the last thread which questioned the usage of "swap out". Hopefully it should explain why it's not the same as "swap" and why most multi-word verbs add a particle because they add something to the meaning of the original verb. (as in pp's explanation of "fry off")

Geamhradh · 31/10/2021 14:53

@GentlySnoring

“These ones” “I am writing to let you know”
Nothing wrong with either of those. "these" as an adjective instead of "these" as a pronoun. It's just style. "I am writing to let you know"- standard functional language, signposting the reason for the communication.

Never heard OUT out. What does it mean?

Dislike off of and hence why

I think "OUT out" means dressing up to go out and going for a long time. It's a sitcom saying.

Off of is incorrect usage.

Expresso instead of espresso!!! Or 'be more pacific' 🌊...instead of 'be more specific'.
I've just started new job, expresso was on the chalk board. By day 2 I was developing a tick every time I looked at it, so changed it when nobody was looking.Blush
