It is etc. not bloody ect.

ECT is electroconvulsive therapy.

I have seen it on this web site literally hundreds of times this week alone.

It's like a contagious form of ignorance that is spreading like a plague.

Is it unreasonable to be driven nuts by the sheer number of people who think it's just ect.

If I don't come back, I have seen it again and my head has exploded.

With you all the way. Don't start me on "would of" ETC!

Chipsinthewoods · 21/10/2021 18:06

It would be sad if people had to pass a spelling and grammar test to post for advice on here

WhenwillSleephappen · 21/10/2021 18:06

Ah I’ve not noticed that.

But I have noticed rediculous

PuppyMonkey · 21/10/2021 18:06

I always assumed it was just a typo.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 21/10/2021 18:07

I've never seen it written ect urghhh. "We was" instead of we were really gets my goat.

Aprilx · 21/10/2021 18:08

I have never seen that, but if I did it would be a one off and I would assume a simply typo. 😕

oneglassandpuzzled · 21/10/2021 18:10

You are defiantly right! 😆

Que is also queue unless you mean cue. In English, that is.

DrManhattan · 21/10/2021 18:11

I've noticed that pacific problem

Chipsinthewoods · 21/10/2021 18:11

I found out the other day reading a Julia Donaldson book that I have been saying sea anenome instead of anemone all my life.

GTAlogic · 21/10/2021 18:12

If I try to type e c t my phone automatically corrects it to eat. People who use that must've had to force their phones to remember the wrong spelling.

Could/should/would of does my head in too.

tartantroosers · 21/10/2021 18:14

I was wandering the same thing Smile

PermanentTemporary · 21/10/2021 18:14

I occasionally used 'ect' as a joke because Molesworth used it. I was surprised that so many people still seemed to know this old joke - I'm naive.

Persay kills me. And I saw some massive misuse of fait accompli the other day.

wallysally · 21/10/2021 18:15

Yanbu and

" Web site "instead of "website"

"I have seen it on this web site literally hundreds of times this week alone."

I think, in this thread about pedantry, you meant figuratively.

Unless, of course, you have counted every single ect and you counted 200 minimum..

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2021 18:19

I'm surprised people haven't seen it. I think it's similar to how literally is used and the incorrect version is now more common than the correct one. The dictionary even changed to include the new meaning of literally due to its popularity.

I think it's too widespread for the use to be eradicated. Its continued appearance probably only creates a sort of confirmation bias.

JaneJeffer · 21/10/2021 18:19

Can we use &c instead?

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 21/10/2021 18:19

I'd never correct someone on a thread as that is dickish but seeing as this is a specific thread - it's bought not brought! Makes my toes crunch.

You bought the toy in the shop, you brought the toy to the party.

OldTinHat · 21/10/2021 18:19

Urgh - and 'Well I done that...' 🤢

yodaforpresident · 21/10/2021 18:19

Add fir in place of for to that list…

JaneJeffer · 21/10/2021 18:20

Or took it maybe Wink
YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 21/10/2021 18:21

Yep. Along with the use of ‘bring’ when ‘take’ is correct (see: ‘he said he’d bring me to my mums next week but now he’s changed his mind’).

Makes me shout ‘TAKE’ in the manner of Father Jack.

Nanasueathome · 21/10/2021 18:22

Yep
BRought is to BRing
And
Bought is to buy

What about lose and loose?

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2021 18:22

Advanced Search suggests over 100 instances of ect being used in the last 7 day period but possibly not more than 200. However, AS doesn't usually find every thread it should and I've never worked out why. So it could be literally hundreds I suppose!
