It is etc. not bloody ect.

ECT is electroconvulsive therapy.

I have seen it on this web site literally hundreds of times this week alone.

It's like a contagious form of ignorance that is spreading like a plague.

Is it unreasonable to be driven nuts by the sheer number of people who think it's just ect.

If I don't come back, I have seen it again and my head has exploded.

OP posts:
PyjamaMamma · 21/10/2021 18:26

Yes, but I can see why people do it: I’ve noticed during lockdowns (ie online school lessons!) that lots of people pronounce it ekcetera, so if it were spelled like that it would make sense that the ‘c’ comes before the ‘t’?

Which brings me to the question: is it meant to be pronounced ekcetera? I come from a Romance language speaking country and we pronounce it as written, with a ‘t’ but it made me wonder.

Threewheeler1 · 21/10/2021 18:26

Stop it, I can't bare it Grin

Goawayquickly · 21/10/2021 18:27

@Nanasueathome

Yep BRought is to BRing And Bought is to buy

What about lose and loose?

I see loose used instead of lose so often I've started to question myself. LOSE weight.
WormYourHonour · 21/10/2021 18:28

@ShowOfHands

Advanced Search suggests over 100 instances of ect being used in the last 7 day period but possibly not more than 200. However, AS doesn't usually find every thread it should and I've never worked out why. So it could be literally hundreds I suppose!
So OP searched them out?

Thus sqewing there experience of teh Mumsnets websight?

Cuntness · 21/10/2021 18:28

It instantly makes me lose all respect for the OP.

So does "loose" instead of lose, actually.

Georgyporky · 21/10/2021 18:28

I do wonder whether English is still taught in schools?
Lose or loose?
Filing or filling?
etc

LifeOfBriony · 21/10/2021 18:29

"Hope your well"

  • my what?
hotmeatymilk · 21/10/2021 18:31

And asking questions without a ? at the end really bug me too!
Guilty, but I reserve this activity for when I’m quote-posting posts to be a scamp at them.

I always read ect as eck-setera and assume people say it that way too

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 21/10/2021 18:33

WTF are the 20% of people who think YABU?? Confused

JaneJeffer · 21/10/2021 18:34

There used to be a poster called Ect. I wonder if they are still around.

OliverBabish · 21/10/2021 18:34

Feint line instead of faint line

What is feint!

Leftbutcameback · 21/10/2021 18:35

Hope your well is full of water?

AleynEivlys · 21/10/2021 18:35

I'm mortified that anyone would write ect. instead of etc.

(MORTIFIED MEANS VERY EMBARRASSED OR ASHAMED. IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE SHOCKED!!!! Angry)

DustyMaiden · 21/10/2021 18:40

Feint is from feigned, pretended.

verybadhairdoo · 21/10/2021 18:41

And breath...it's breathe, people, breathe!!!!!

Maireas · 21/10/2021 18:41

@Cuntness

It instantly makes me lose all respect for the OP.

So does "loose" instead of lose, actually.

Dear lord. Every single time people mean "lose" (weight, money, whatever) they write loose. Drives me mad.
HyggeTygge · 21/10/2021 18:43

I can't stand "ect". Makes me think of ectoplasm.
Also hate CAHMS and phased (for fazed).

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/10/2021 18:43

I've noticed feint being used instead of faint a couple of times - feint means distracting/a movement meant to distract, I think.

Instead of 'que' and 'cue' (when the user means queue) I've also seen 'q' 😕

KirstenBlest · 21/10/2021 18:45

The word literally literally makes me want to scream.

Riapia · 21/10/2021 18:46

I don’t care as it doesn’t effect me. 😉😁😁😁

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 21/10/2021 18:46

@DustyMaiden

Feint is from feigned, pretended.
But people are writing ‘feint’ when they mean ‘faint’.

The pregnancy boards, especially, are littered with it - ‘can you see a feint line?’ In fact, it’s the only place I think I’ve seen the word misspelt.

TreaslakeandBack · 21/10/2021 18:46

We should teach Latin in schools. Et cetera means “and the rest” in Latin.

Chelyanne · 21/10/2021 18:47

I find it amusing rather than infuriating

Ime for I'm is one of my favourites

HyggeTygge · 21/10/2021 18:49

I would assume Ime meant "in my experience". Not seen it in the other context!

RevolvingPivot · 21/10/2021 18:50

This is where my dyslexia comes in. I thought you had written etc and etcetera. I didn't understand.
