I have to get road signs made for work from time to time. The sign makers write exactly what you ask them. You fill in a form. They do a mock up fir you to check. You agree it. They don’t spell/ sense check it.

SupermanInk · 10/07/2021 16:40

You took a photo? And you’re still thinking about it weeks later? 😬

Orangedots · 10/07/2021 16:54

I drive past it everyday! I forgot about this part of MN until today! 🤣

I fell your itch @Orangedots, there’s a “Hair Studio’s” in my village!

Irritating.
But I seem to be getting used to / more accepting as I get older.
Just "tut" and carry on.
I do still get bothered though if I see a number of mistakes in one day or one outing.

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 11/07/2021 13:52

Grin @30degreesandmeltinghere sounds like somewhere nice for a weekend get away!

Tiari · 11/07/2021 13:53

Grrrr... that "isle" ??

ahoyshipmates · 11/07/2021 13:54

Haha, I know where that sign is, OP!

On one occasion I couldn't read the sign as I drove past because it was obscured by a parked lorry. Grin

30degreesandmeltinghere · 11/07/2021 13:56

And this one in the same shop...

This is Pedants' Corner Confused
Tiari · 11/07/2021 13:59

I've noticed a lot of mumsnetters don't know the difference between lose and loose.
That's quite irritating but I never say anything, not my place Halo

FoxVillage · 11/07/2021 14:00

@30degreesandmeltinghere

That one looks like the person might have dyslexia.

But for someone to actually pay to have a sign made up surely they should check.

Isn't the form online now? I have spell check on my phone right now as I'm typing. Or are we still talking paper?
Tiari · 11/07/2021 14:06

My ex was a qualified printer (apprenticeship in the "old days") newspapers, books etc. Part of his job was to be a "reader"and everything had to be spell checked.
Maybe they don't do that nowadays?

It's one thing on a hand written sign cobbled together in a hurry - I would probably roll my eyes a bit and forget about it (possibly even have a bit of a giggle if it was a funny mistakeGrin) - but I can't help but feel exasperated at the permanent signs. Shop signs are the worst. Advertising your business with poor grammar or spelling is just asking for customers to take their business elsewhere.

ahoyshipmates · 11/07/2021 14:13

A double glazing firm round here used to advertise in the local paper with the following enticement:

"We use Pilkington K glass because we don't know any better"

Print out a correction on a large sheet of paper. Laminate it and then go back and stick it over the offending words.

As for isle instead of aisle, if it was on a piece of card I’d have been very tempted to whip my pen out of my bag and add the missing "a" myself.

Perhaps that is why I like Pedants’ Corner.

It is general carelessness and lack of proof reading.

Ok, I must be going blind but what is wrong with it?

Omg people just don’t think about what they’re saying/writing. It’s just lazy! ‘Teas’ but ‘cake’s’ ?? Where’s the sense?
Tiari · 11/07/2021 14:18

Advertising your business with poor grammar or spelling is just asking for customers to take their business elsewhere

But how many customers actually notice? Sometimes I feel like the only one.

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2021 14:20

@kowari online, but some “mistakes” are still legitimate spellings.

@Glenthebattleostrich - I recognise those wagons, but then I know you live near me!

@ahoyshipmates - I think that slogan is deliberately tongue in cheek.
