I keep seeing 'chocked' and in my mind all I can see is someone choking on a giant wooden block Confused

How do people not know that adding the c totally changes the pronunciation? Where does the c come from? Why would you think it's needed?

To choke
I choked
He is choking

Just 1 c!

It's an easy typo Blush

"There was also a good thread about it on Pedants' years ago before it was taken over by people who think it's here to slag other people's English off. In those days, we used to enjoy intelligent conversation about quirks of language use not "mwahaha it's should have" puerile smuggery."

That sounds much more fun. The whole "should have" thing has been done to death all over the internet. It's just boring at this point.

MrsFruitcake · 13/04/2020 22:29

I saw a handwritten sign above a box with some free tat in it at Lidl today saying 'Free boardom busters'.

Postspecific
Sorry but it is 'leckie', or 'leccy' delivered in this house in a Scouse accent because I lived on Merseyside for 25 years and I love Northern accents. 😊

missmouse101 · 14/04/2020 14:10

Surly has cropped up a fair bit, when the writer means surely. Very annoying and completely distracting from the content of the post.

BrooHaHa · 14/04/2020 14:11

Does god have a capital letter if he/she/it doesn't exist?

I'd think so. Presumably you capitalise Piglet and Tigger, though they don't exist? However, if you were using gods' sake, as in, referring to all gods, I think you could leave that in lower case.

forgetthehousework · 14/04/2020 14:29

I think that I may have found my spiritual home here. (Although I am a little worried about posting this, just in case I've made any errors).

BrooHaHa · 14/04/2020 14:31

@forgetthehousework

I believe that the brackets should be included in your sentence and placed before the full stop, if that makes sense?

newtb · 14/04/2020 14:44

I hate friendship circle wtf's wrong with friends?

AmelieTaylor · 14/04/2020 14:47

People not knowing the difference between to and too.

I do!

My bastard phone doesn't. I don't understand why it changes things that are correct as written?!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2020 18:34

Heretic...Grin

iklboo · 14/04/2020 18:38

You can use brackets after a sentence, starting with a capital letter but the full stop should also be inside the brackets.

BrooHaHa · 14/04/2020 20:02

That's really interesting. I did not know that.

I think someone on FB local site has been reading the OP as she was moaning how much Chockolate she had at Easter

CatWithKittens · 18/04/2020 18:45

Oh Viques, did you really mean to write:
"Do you think if all us pedants signed up ......."

Did you not really mean "Do you think if all we pedants signed up ......."

Dorp · 21/04/2020 18:17

I have to share this, from a local Facebook group: '...our fast paste lives...' Shock

That's a new one for me!

MikeUniformMike · 07/06/2020 15:38

This is an example of something that I don't like:

" Lovely name, i'm bias tho as my DD is called [Name] "

It is taken from a real post.

I am biased would annoy me as it seems to add nothing but a hint of smugness to the sentence, but the missing -ed is something I see a lot.

I am fumming as I type. Grin

MikeUniformMike · 07/06/2020 15:56

"And breath."

I must go and put some cloths on. I keep loosing them.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/06/2020 16:00

For all intensive purposes.

I have no words.

VenusTiger · 07/06/2020 16:22

What is the problem with "biased" and why do so many people misuse it?
