I keep seeing 'chocked' and in my mind all I can see is someone choking on a giant wooden block Confused

How do people not know that adding the c totally changes the pronunciation? Where does the c come from? Why would you think it's needed?

To choke
I choked
He is choking

Just 1 c!

Jeez Athena - is that attempting to say ‘you have to wait weeks...’? That’s terrible if so!

MintyMabel · 10/04/2020 01:09

All those people flaunting the lockdown rules at the moment.

EugenesAxe · 10/04/2020 01:10

@Postspecific it’s a rule isn’t it? C followed by e, y or i becomes soft.

I think you’re probably joking, given the blanc joke, but in case not: Lucy, juicy, cycle.

Postspecific · 10/04/2020 01:14

No I’m not joking. I mean, I was, with ‘blanc’, but mostly to soften the question in case it was a stupid one.

I understand that c followed by y makes an s sound, but I was wondering if we have examples of c becoming s because of y where c had previously been hard c.

I may have been overthinking it.

Bluebooby · 10/04/2020 01:19

Ooh I have an example! Sarcy.

Postspecific · 10/04/2020 01:21

Alright, sarky.

Postspecific · 10/04/2020 01:23

... And I know it’s, All right but common usage in dialogue means it’s fine.

Athenajm80 · 10/04/2020 01:27

@Eugenesaxe I think so. I couldn't think of anything else. I was tempted to ask, and perhaps point out their errors but didn't think that would be appreciated 😁

Postspecific · 10/04/2020 01:32

Okay, here’s one. What about ’elecy’? - it’s an abbreviation that uses (what was originally) a hard c followed by a y and maintains the c usage.

... This is where you tell me I’m the only person that’s ever used that abbreviation for electricity.

Cissyandflora · 10/04/2020 01:36

There’s a prevalence of he’s for his which looks confusing. So it becomes a possessive he’s.

Infer and imply are frequently used incorrectly, even on the BBC no less.

whitedogpoo · 10/04/2020 01:53

Isn’t it normally leccy? Never heard of elecy which in my head is el-es-ee

EugenesAxe · 10/04/2020 11:09

Ah I get you now @Postspecific. I have a real feeling there is one (apart from sarky) but I can’t think of it!

Actually, you could use bike itself as an example - bicycle one of my favourite words at school for exemplifying both versions of ‘c’ - and obviously one where we change the hard c to a k in the abbreviation.

iklboo · 10/04/2020 11:12

You flout the rules.

iklboo · 10/04/2020 11:20

Argh. I have just seen the correction. For some reason my phone didn't load a couple of pages. Sorry!

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 10/04/2020 11:21

“I couldn’t breath”

Argh!

Peregrina · 10/04/2020 11:29

Bicycle - bike

But open microphone - open mic. Which I always want to read as mick.
Why not mike?

Pinkywoo · 10/04/2020 11:46

Even worse than "chocked" I've just seen "imootion" on another thread, I think they mean emotion. Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 11/04/2020 20:02

I've seen a few occurrences recently of eek instead of eke. I don't know if this is a new thing or just that there's more ekeing necessary at the moment.Confused

JudyCoolibar · 12/04/2020 00:48

Anyone else round here cringing at Pritti Patel this evening with her "Martin and myself are going to ..." ?

JaneJeffer · 12/04/2020 00:57

Numbers from one to nine should be written as words.

Ritascornershop · 12/04/2020 01:01

Is it that people aren’t taught spelling as much anymore, or that I’m exposed to more of them on the internet (or both)?

Should of, could of, better of - all annoying me this week.

People not knowing the difference between to and too.

Loose and lose - why is this one so difficult?!!!

Your and you’re, again, I do not see why people confuse these.

PurpleDaisies · 12/04/2020 08:45

In primary school spelling is taught as a key subject. Of course, most of those people aren’t using mumsnet.

HMSSophie · 12/04/2020 09:11

"Me and Maureen..." makes me literally wince and usually the words "Maureen and I" are out of my mouth before I know it. Then I have to apologise.

I'm old enough to find American spelling used by a British person infuriating.

I'm also old enough to believe in cathedral restitution of corporal punishment for the use of "get" in reference to ordering.

"As regards" instead of "Regarding" needs to be a crime.

viques · 12/04/2020 10:27

me and Maureen
Not to mention myself and Maureen

SwedishEdith · 12/04/2020 11:45

Loose and lose - why is this one so difficult?!!!

I think it's possibly that lose sounds more like looze so only one o doesn't feel/look right. I mean, lose looks like it could/should be pronounced like rose or nose.

(And an advert appeared in tv for Loose Women as I wrote this Shock)
