It's not a 'quote' it's a QUOTATION

Am I allowed a little gentle rant in here? I don't know why this one gets on my nerves so much, but it does. The verb is 'to quote'. The noun is 'quotation'. I will accept 'quote' in the context of 'getting a quote from the builder' as it's become such common parlance but it sets my teeth on edge when people about 'a literary quote'.

Grrr!

What's even worse is "invite" instead of "invitation"...

That doesn't annoy me quite so much, but I can see why it should.

I see your point. Oddly, I am a paid up pedant (and paid for being one in my day job) but this doesn't really bother me at all. Maybe because I'm a journalist and so talk about quotes all day long.

Quote doesn't bother me either, although I will usually put 'quotation' at the beginning of a document & then say 'quote' afterwards.

What about speech marks or quotation marks, as in being called "quote marks". Is that the work of the Devil as well? I do that
