Party bag alternatives

Any ideas? Want to keep the cost down, don't like the usual crap you get in them and actually disagree with them in principle but don't want ds's friends to have a go at him about having no party bag! Don't mind if it's not a bag, just need ideas for something to take home along with the cake.

Anyone?

Haven't had chance to read through the whole thread I'm afraid so apologies if I repeat anyone. Have to agree about "doing the right thing" and also about buying big packs and splitting. I have bought big packs of hair decorations (bobbles, slides etc) and split those (Primark are very good for funky and cheap ones)
For crafty stuff, try Baker Ross (bakerross.co.uk)
Not only are they good for party bags but for all your crafty stuff at home, loads of great things to make. They also do different size packs of things, say notebooks in packs of 6 or 12. Cheaper the more you order.

Now dd is a bit older, this year going to 8 year old parties, they are beginning to get a "take-home present" rather than a bag of bits which she really likes.

I'm doing crap from Baker Ross, I've decided

Do they deliver quick?

Not necessarily, unfortunately. I think it's worse when a new catalogue has just come out though, so you might be OK. I don't think they usually take more than 2 weeks, though I have a feeling roisin had a long wait just before Christmas. You can check whether the things you want to order are in stock on the web though, so that might help.

Gobbledigook · 14/03/2005 21:03

Oh thanks. I've got till 10th April but with it being Easter soon I guess they'll get a rush on - best get on with it!!

I ordered from them on Saturday (for April 17th) so I can keep you posted!

Gobbledigook · 14/03/2005 21:05

OK - off to look at the website!

We did a school order from BR 2 weeks before Christmas and it arrived in 3 days, so I think it varies.

Gobbledigook · 14/03/2005 21:56

Thanks everyone - I've done my order from Baker Ross. Each party bag will consist of:

1 Giant Bug Up
1 Bouncy ball
1 Sliding whistle
1 pair of trendy shades

Comes to 88p for each bag! Will add cake and chocs and I think that's a pretty cool party bag and not one I'd mind receiving at home!

Was going to cut down to 3 toys instead of 4 but dh had a go and said I was tight!

He's also instructed me to change my order for the 'kids bouncy slide' to the 'giant bouncy slide'!!

Don't you love how you do all the organising and sorting out and then they come in and go 'is that it?'!!!

rephrasing my question of aeons ago, not that I feel ignored or anything , should I be adding to bog standard party bag provided at ds's party at soft play centre - £9 per head includes small toy (no idea what), small choccy bar, balloon (I have to bring cake).

?????????????????????????????????????????????????

zenia · 14/03/2005 22:34

How about a cadbury's easter egg? 85p each

huggybear · 14/03/2005 22:36

wish i had read this a few days ago - have recently spent 60 quid on party bags. there were 30 kids though.

JudeB · 15/03/2005 08:28

My DD just had her 4th birthday party and for that I bought stationary sets from a 'Poundstretcher' type shop for £1 each. Then I wrapped them up in cheap paper so each child had a present to take home. They all loved getting their own present and unwrapping them and the parents appreciated not having a bag of c**p.
The girl sets actually contained quite a bit - big sheet of stickers, glitter pen, hairclips, pad, pen all inside a plastic pencil case. Good value I thought - just as much stuff as you'd put inside a party bag.

TwinSetAndPearls · 15/03/2005 10:33

I am going to stand up for seeds!

I was discussing this with a friend as she thought seeds were fab and although they may be a quis something a bag they will do the whole party. My local market is doing packs of large seed trays for 99p ( 10 trays I think.

So at dd easter party I am going to let all the kids plant a sunflower seed to to atke home along with their prizes from easter egg hunt.

I know I am taking the discussion off tangent here but poundland are doing trays of about 36 easter chicks for £1 which are fab for going on invites or in easter nests etc.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2005 10:39

Those easter chicks are what I use for my easter egg hunt, TwinSetAndPearls. Must go to Poundland and restock!

Gobbledigook · 15/03/2005 11:41

Jodee - all my friends who've had soft play parties have added to them but just with a bit more chocolate usually. I think they've bought a tin of Celebrations and just bunged a few in each one. HTH!

At a recent party we got given a tumbler (glass) with a car inside & cake, which I thought was excellent, instead of a bag of toys
