Party bag alternatives

Any ideas? Want to keep the cost down, don't like the usual crap you get in them and actually disagree with them in principle but don't want ds's friends to have a go at him about having no party bag! Don't mind if it's not a bag, just need ideas for something to take home along with the cake.

Anyone?

a helium balloon each?

Freckle · 13/03/2005 13:06

Order a set of books (can often get 10 for £9.99 or less) from The Book People. I normally give a book, a piece of cake and, for the younger ones, possibly a balloon and that's it. Ends up costing far less than loads of tat and the parents love not having to deal with all the tat later. The children really like seeing what book they've got. The boys enjoy deciding what book to give to whom too.

Depends on the age, at dd's party,I bought the Band Aid cd for the girls to take home , which they all loved, and done a bit for charity. So perhaps a cd single in the charts? Works for boys and girls.

Another time at a party the children got given their food in a lunch box which then became their party bag to take home.

if you do mcdonalds food for the kids, then its two pounds per child for food, and the toy included will be their take home thing.

Love the packet of seeds and a spade idea...

hatsoff · 13/03/2005 15:43

dd got one of those whirly windmill things at a party recently, which I though was nice, and she seemed happy enough

AuntyQuated · 13/03/2005 15:44

i like the seeds idea

AuntyQuated · 13/03/2005 15:45

sunflowers would be brill for older ones

cress for younger as more immediate

Gobbledigook · 13/03/2005 16:32

Thanks everyone - I can never find the 10 books for £10 offers unless I'm just looking in the wrong place!

Love the seeds idea so might just do that one!

I HATE this expectation of a party bag though -grrrr

why not just give a piece of cake and a balloon and do one little wrapped pressie each in a lucky dip (you've got the shredder!) to be pulled just as they're leaving - makes it a bit more exciting for them!

DSs came home with a one of those little boxes of a lego model each once. Thoroughly enjoyed them.

JoolsToo · 13/03/2005 16:44

what usually comes in a party bag anyway?

JoolsToo · 13/03/2005 16:44

SD - aren't those expensive?

Gobbledigook · 13/03/2005 16:45

LOL Cod!

JT - could do that but need a really cheap toy then - just £1 a toy would bring it to £25!!! Actually, Podmog just reminded me I was going to do a 'sweet' hunt in the garden and do the same thing (put in one bowl but divide out into bags for later) so perhaps I'll just do that.

I wish I could be brave enough to do bugger all

They're about £1.50 I think, Jools. Over budget for GdG but not too bad.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2005 16:50

Tescos had tins of 100 marbles for 98p

SoupDragon · 13/03/2005 16:52

Bag them up in 50s and that's less than 50p a bag.
