Thread 55 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Autumn 25 - Yr 4 Uni and Graduates

Oblomov25 · 09/10/2025 12:55

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

I'm being hidden. No idea why

Comefromaway · 27/01/2026 20:48

The gum word is flagged as it can refer to certain meds that are not legally for sale in the UK. (That my son takes for sleep issues)

Comefromaway · 27/01/2026 20:50

Mumsnet what Cantonet is suggesting you can buy for children in Boots

Cantonet · 27/01/2026 22:10

Oh really @Comefromaway?
I never knew that. Wondered whether there's a fetishist with balding in their armament on MN

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/01/2026 10:03

I can see your message @Cantonet so I'm assuming they reviewed you and have decided you are not a dodgy pusher! 😁

Anyone around? DD is all of a sudden wanting to sign up with a group of friends for a house next year and we haven't done this before, what do I need to know?

They seem a sensible bunch who have done their homework and looked at lots of places. They have also spoken to the current tenants without the landlord being present (arrived early for viewing) and had positive reports. Of course they want a guarantor, I guess there isn't really a way round that? There was none of this when I was a student.

EndlessDistraction · 28/01/2026 14:46

I should add, don't mind being a guarantor for DD but don't want the jointly and severally type.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/01/2026 14:47

I had no input in DS's housing choice for second or third year. One good thing was bills were included so at least they didn't have to worry about massive winter bills. Only other thing was I took out guarantor insurance as they all seem to be every one in the household is liable for each others rent debt.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/01/2026 14:48

Cross post, that's what I took out the insurance for, they don't seem to be able to avoid those contracts. the insurance was not too much.

EndlessDistraction · 28/01/2026 14:50

Ah, that's good to know, I'd forgotten about the guarantor insurance. Just looked at the uni SU website, they have a contract checking service, I will suggest DD does that.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/01/2026 14:54

Yes, definitely use the checking service if they can. Also try to find a house with vaguely similar room sizes!

EndlessDistraction · 28/01/2026 16:05

This one has two bigger and two smaller rooms, no ensuites to argue over and they have agreed that the bigger room people should pay more. But DD says the smaller ones are a lot roomier than some they've seen.

EndlessDistraction · 28/01/2026 23:00

Well, they’ve applied for it but said there has been a lot of interest because of the good location. So we’ll have to wait and see.

mummyinbeds · 29/01/2026 09:51

Hope you don't mind me sharing this here but I'm having a proud mum moment 😁 Struggling DS, who has scraped through uni by the skin of his teeth, has finally got a first for a French exam sat before Christmas. It's only 15% of a 20 credit module but he did it!!!! I didn't even mind the 1am phone call to tell me 🤣

Aslockton · 29/01/2026 10:28

Ahhh, that is lovely news. I love hearing ‘proud mum moments’.

Comefromaway · 29/01/2026 10:32

That's fantastic, well done to him.

Ds has another job this week at a prestigious regional theatre with an international reputation. Only a small job but very exciting.

crazycrofter · 29/01/2026 10:36

Ah @mummyinbeds that's fantastic - well done to your ds!!! With two similar dc, whose lives are permanently chaotic, I totally understand your pride - he's done brilliantly, with all the challenges he's faced 👏

crazycrofter · 29/01/2026 10:37

And well done to @Comefromaway ds - another step in the right direction!!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2026 11:46

Fantastic news @mummyinbeds , I think we are collectively proud of your DS for that result! 👏

@Comefromaway well done to your DS for getting another theatre job, brilliant opportunity for him.

DS1 is doing my absolute head in at the moment, all work related but I don't have the energy to explain. Please just pray to all the deities that he gets some sense before he makes rash decisions.

crazycrofter · 29/01/2026 11:52

Oh dear @JustHereWithMyPopcorn - praying he doesn't make any rash decisions!!!

Comefromaway · 29/01/2026 12:25

I've given up worrying about rash decisions. I used to spend so much time and energy worrying about some of the things ds did! But I understand how frustrating it can be.

Ds has another job in a couple of weeks working on a one day concert MT performance that is quite high profile. It's scary but he will be working alongside some people he first met at NYMT.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/01/2026 14:17

I am trying to channel zen but my nature is a terrible worrier and overthinker so it's hard!

It sounds like your DS is really making headway in his career @Comefromaway you must be very proud of him.

crazycrofter · 29/01/2026 14:45

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I tend to think years into the future all the time, I've started worrying about retirement already and I'm not quite 50 yet 😂 - but my two have forced me to worry a bit less I think! Not easy though....

Things will be ok I'm sure, he's got his degree and work experience on his CV...

Shimy · 29/01/2026 16:38

@mummyinbeds Congrts to him.

im struggling with tennis elbow flar up at the moment so can olny type with left hand.

EwwSprouts · 29/01/2026 16:39

Fingers crossed for no rash decisions.

@mummyinbeds Love it!

@Comefromaway Great updates from your DS. I went to see Miss Saigon (touring production) last week and it was amazing. The Engineer was in the big night of the musicals I believe.

I have wasted most of today literally driving in circles. Booked the work van in for its first MOT a week ago, with garage it was bought from. Gave the vehicle make and registration number. Dropped it in last night for this morning. They parked it while I was signing paperwork. 9.30am call this morning 'we can't do it, long axle'... Hurrah it has now passed at another garage but what crap customer service from the original one.
