Thread 54 - Summer 25 - Graduations after Uni Year 3

Oblomov25 · 20/06/2025 17:15

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

I love hearing all your posts, out dc thriving, in Vietnam etc.

I text ds1 now asking for a phone call. He did FaceTime Dh the other day but I missed it because I was dropping ds2 to football. I know ds1 is incredibly busy, he just ran the Notts 1/2 marathon and said he adores Notts city, the people are so nice, cheering him on. He's really liked Nottingham. Has taken to it massively. And is enjoying his 4th and final year. Just an occasional phone call to his mum might help.

@Oblomov25i didn’t realise your ds1 is doing 4 years at uni the same as my ds2. I midded that on the other thread. Ds2 went back to Sussex last weekend. He had been home since the beginning of July. Uni doesn’t start back until next week. Most of his friends have finished university though they don’t seem to have plans.

icanbewhatiwant · 30/09/2025 07:18

@Oblomov25i just realised we are on the other thread 😂😂 I’ll wake up in a minute.

Oblomov25 · 30/09/2025 08:57

No worries Ivan 🤣

Does anyone remember if we have a list of those going into yr 4 a few pages back? i seem to remember we had one. It'd be good to know those who are finalists, i don't want to create another if there's one already.

There's a heading that says 'still studying!' just above delphigirljr on the list.

Oblomov25 · 30/09/2025 20:56

Can you please add on my son too.
Son studying sports sports science in Surrey - 3rd year.

crazycrofter · 30/09/2025 23:12

How’s he getting on @Cantonet ?

Ds seems to be throwing himself into student life - the non-clubbing variety anyway! Apart from one of his modules disappearing off his timetable and his loan being delayed, there have been no dramas at all yet.. He’s good at looking after himself and his organisation skills do seem to have improved! He is stressing unnecessarily about potentially missing out on getting a Spring week - he seems to think that without a Spring week he won’t get an internship, and without an internship he won’t get a grad job! It does feel a bit early to be worrying about that 🤔

Seeline · 01/10/2025 09:27

DD seems to be living her final year. She only has 2x30 credit modules/semester this year rather than 3x20 credits. She is a little bit lost with the same xtra free time. One of her current ones doesn't even have reading ahead of each lecture which she has always had before! I've told her to use the free time to really start concentrating on Masters applications. I'm sure next semester will be full on with her dissertation.
Loving her new house, and housemates. Only slight panic yesterday when one of the CO monitors went off - apparently she could hear it as she walked back from her lecture! Emergency gas call out said it was a faulty monitor (the second one hadn't reacted) having tested everything so at least she still has heating and hot water.
Rejoined all her dance societies which are so important to her - mentally as well as physically for all her joint issues.
Fingers crossed that all continues.

Pleased to hear others are settling into the new year too.

crazycrofter · 01/10/2025 10:50

Good to hear dd is happy @Seeline . Dd is also really enjoying her new house and housemates. There are 7 of them in the house - 3 were friends of dd but didn’t know each other and the other 3 came via advertising, but they’ve all hit it off and it’s much more sociable than last year’s house - lots of time spent together in the lounge. I hope it continues! Dd has also bought two rabbits which are living in her room!

Oblomov25 · 01/10/2025 10:56

Seeline, sounds good for dd. Ds phoned last night. He can finally walk after his Nottingham 1/2 marathon. He's loving it all, also like your dd has loads of spare time. He's off hiking all the time, 3 times already, again this weekend. He's finished his cashflow forecasting as treasurer of the hiking society. all good. He certainly lives life to the full, never stops. That boy needs to calm down. Unlike me who is quite sloth-like and does very little. In his house they've all agreed that everyone cooks for everyone only once a week. I'd like that, cooking for all once, then being fed for the rest of the week. Where do sign up?

The atmosphere of year 4 seems very relaxed indeed. He has no dissertation. No exams. He finished the last of his 12 accountancy papers last year in year 3, so has none in year 4. Plus no dissertation. So just lectures? He's enjoying the Autumn Term of Notts. He got his placement dates yesterday of 1st march. But as classic Pwc his posh apartment in London doesn't cover the full term of his placement so he'll have to come home and work remotely for the last part - seems silly.

Anyway then presumably he'll start work for them, the following september, post graduation, its practically a given, do his final 3 papers over a year, the 13-15 of 15, and he'll be qualified. He's looking to go hiking in both South America, i think still Patagonia, and also apply to get a sought after unlikely place on an Asia hiking trip in the summer.

There are a few of with dc’s doing a 4th year then. I’ll be glad when ds2 has finished, then we have a year off, after that maybe ds3 will go to uni. He doesn’t know yet though.

Shimy · 01/10/2025 14:18

4th year seems to be kicking off with a bang for the boys and gals, hope DS2 rides the same wave!

@crazycrofter Your DS is spot on with the progression from Spring week, internship and job (for some sectors). You are very lucky he's completely switched on to how it works and he's starting it all at the right time. The biggest problem many face is, by the time they realise they're not being successful at job applications because all the grad vacancies were filled by interns and all the intern places were filled by those who did Spring weeks and preparation for Spring weeks starts in year 1, it's too late.

@Oblomov25 When i asked ds2 about his dissertation and what he's going to base it on? he just said casually, there is no dissertation. I've asked him to double check he's getting an honours degree because in my day only those graduating without honours didn't do a dissertation. This is all to me.

Cantonet · 01/10/2025 17:29

I think he's ok @crazycrofter.
He was meant to be going to see Dd1 & boyfriend on Sunday for Sunday lunch but then told her he wasn't available, as he would be going to Bath & would be back too late. I can see he's got a lot of new followers on Instagram. I'm going to chat with him tonight to see how things are going, as we've been mainly messaging. I've been deliberately very much leaving him to it compared to last year...
I don't even know what spring week is?
When I Google it it's spring entry for students.
Is that right?

Shimy · 01/10/2025 18:27

Spring weeks usually happen in April during the Easter holidays. It's a 1 or 2 week internship aimed at 2nd yr undergrads within finance, consulting or law. Most firms fast-track their interns to summer internships (6-10weeks).

crazycrofter · 01/10/2025 21:25

Yes @shimy although Ds thinks they’re for first years - whereas you’d do a longer internship in the summer after second year.

That sounds positive @cantonet - that’s he’s being sociable/busy?

Cantonet · 01/10/2025 21:27

Well I've just spoken to him & he's frightfully superior 😂
