Thread 54 - Summer 25 - Graduations after Uni Year 3

Oblomov25 · 20/06/2025 17:15

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Amazing news @Alwaysplayspicc Good on her for pushing on. Here's wishing all the best with her training.

Alwaysplayspicc · 03/08/2025 23:09

Thank you!
She put a lot of effort into preparing for the interview, researching the brand, CEO etc. She even chose her outfit to reflect the style of the clothes they sell.
Oart of the interview involved DD putting together an outfit for an imaginary customer, following a specific brief - age, occasion, preferences etc.

DD is particularly happy that the job comes with £1k clothing allowance per season!

ealingwestmum · 04/08/2025 08:33

She absolutely nailed that brief @Alwaysplayspicc!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 04/08/2025 12:09

Congrats to your DD @Alwaysplayspicc !! A good life lesson for all of our DCs to research your potential employer and use that info wisely.

AnneOfCleavage · 04/08/2025 14:25

That’s awesome news @AlwaysplayspiccWell done to your resourceful DD on doing her homework and nailing her interview - well deserved 👏👏

Delphigirl · 04/08/2025 15:24

DS has spent 3 of his first 4 days of unexpected unemployment watching cricket at the oval courtesy of dh’s cousin whose son couldn’t go at the last minute. Happy as Larry doesn’t begin to cover it 🤣🤣

Delphigirl · 04/08/2025 15:34

Ps my DD2 could not be any less interested in clothes/grooming/fashion if she tried. Trying to work out if she has enough clothes to go to uni (Exeter) or if I have to force her to shop at gunpoint. She has 3 pairs of jeans, 3 pairs of other trousers (like Toms trunks/linen type, more summer than winter tbh), probably 4 hoodies /sweatshirts and a large selection of bandt shirts. No going out clothes but I don’t think Exeter really dresses up much for clubs she wouldn’t dress up anyway, she’d just take off her hoodie. Can I assume she won’t need a skirt or a dress? She can borrow or buy I guess if something requires it? And how many pairs of trainers does she need to get her through to Christmas? She currently has one, almost dead. Three? The dead pair for clubbing, some samba type and some airforce 1s? Oh and some for sport? Then she has a puffa jacket, a brown suede jacket (from me - New York purchase in 1996 - sigh) and a waterproof. Is that ok?

Feels insufficient somehow.

ealingwestmum · 04/08/2025 15:51

Hehe @Delphigirl, your daughter must be the queen of micro packing after her past year so I would have full confidence that what she has is exactly enough!

I wish mine packed like that. We spend a fortune on additional luggage each flight, thankfully she looks after all things personal leisure related herself :)

ealingwestmum · 04/08/2025 15:52

(my husband's quite grumpy after this afternoon's cricket result. He has absolutely loved this series with its close dramas)

Delphigirl · 04/08/2025 15:54

Ds and DH said Fridays play was thr best they’ve ever seen!

Cantonet · 04/08/2025 15:56

Fabulous news @Alwaysplayspicc.
A stylist seems to be an increasingly good job to do these days. I follow several on Instagram who've made it their career.
@Delphigirlits useful/easier moving a minimalist into Uni. Only 1/4 of mine were like that. The rest took everything bar the kitchen sink. Even the head of house at Loughborough commented re. Ds2 & his clobber on moving in day. The worst, most depressing thing was though when I had to move all the stuff out again after 3 weeks, when he decided he couldn't cope 😭 Crossing my fingers that it won't be a repeat at Bristol Uni this year 🤞🏼

Delphigirl · 04/08/2025 15:56

this is the girl who when she was sent Chanel cleanser as an 18th birthday present by a godmother said “what’s cleanser? Like shower gel?” And when I said “No! For washing your face!” Said “Oh, I don’t do that”. 😱
needless to say her skin is flawless so there is probably a lesson there…

Oh fingers tightly crossed @cantonet!
yes I should embrace the minimalism, you are all right. Mind you the cooking equipment and ingredients makes up for it. She has announced she can’t possibly be expected to go without a large Thyme plant.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 04/08/2025 17:03

We were all glued to the cricket yesterday, I knew it wouldn't be good news after Root went. Some good drama though!

crazycrofter · 04/08/2025 17:07

Sounds like ds @Delphigirl . He's also used to travelling light after his time abroad and he doesn't have many clothes. Cooking equipment is very important though!

crazycrofter · 04/08/2025 17:10

He has his own fridge at home for all his meal prep ... I really don't know how he'll cope with one shelf in uni halls!

Oh, she sounds EXACTLY like my DD. About three pairs of jeans, some cut off ones for summer. lots of merch teeshirts and hoodies, a few plain vest tops, a coat she's had since primary school (she had her last growth spurt very early), three pairs of trainers (one everyday, one smart worn once to her prom, one ancient). Prom dress, one smartish day dress which also dates back to early secondary years and her black lace up school shoes. About 5 years ago I asked her what she wanted for Christmas and she barked at me "no beauty stuff". She does wear make-up now but very minimal and cleansers etc are very basic. No jewellery of note either just a few beads on thongs etc. Bag is a sports direct rucksack, none of your Longchamp totes here.

@Alwaysplayspicc so pleased for your DD, really well done to her.

DD has checked clearing for her subject today, she is a bit nervous about results day. She should be fine based on what they are offering in clearing but still getting twitchy, this summer has flown and we feel behind. We've been to John Lewis today to choose a laptop as we don't really have time to wait for DSA now, she hasn't had it approved yet (she kept putting off applying). Eeek.

Alwaysplayspicc · 04/08/2025 19:15

Your DS might get a taste for unemployment after today, Delphi. 🤣
Your DD would be aghast at the amount of body and hair care and other miscellaneous beauty stuff my DD has…I dread to think how much more she may purchase now she’s working in a city shopping mall.

First day’s training seems to have gone well AND she’s come home to an email from the uni, telling her her appeal against penalties for missing a deadline has been upheld.
It was 10 marks and has increased her overall weighting to 67, so not quite enough for consideration for a 1st, but it was always about the principle so she’s happy.

Whooo hooo great result @Alwaysplayspicc ! Well done here. 67 a very solid 2(I) indeed. @ExtensivelyDecorating i think we have twins. DDs rucksack an anonymous cheap black thing. I buy her alternatives but they don’t get used and I end up ‘borrowing’ them back. Currently enjoying a Herve chapelier tote I gave her for Xmas 🤣

crazycrofter · 04/08/2025 21:28

That’s amazing news @Alwaysplayspicc - a really good 2:1 is something to be proud of! Glad her first day went well.

@ExtensivelyDecorating ds hasn’t had his DSA assessment yet, so I’m thinking he might have to borrow the same laptop dd borrowed earlier in the year when she’d spilled juice all over hers and was waiting for the DSA equipment! I knew dh shouldn’t have been so quick to hand it back!

I’m feeling a bit nervous for clearing as a few unis have put up their grades and Ds is just short - hopefully at least one will reduce their requirements on the day!

Seeline · 04/08/2025 21:32

@Delphigirl - what a test mat h to be watching! Haven't been to a test for 20 years, but we've got our annual family trip to the Hundred this bank holiday.

My DD has a couple of pairs of trackie bottoms - not a fan of jeans. She only has trainers for her dancing, lives in either a pair of Vans or her DMs. She has lots of jumpers - feels the cold 😁

EwwSprouts · 04/08/2025 21:37

@Alwaysplayspicc Congratulations on the job! The degree update is also great news.

Sorry everyone I know nothing about cricket.

NCTDN · 04/08/2025 22:26

More great news - well done to those people !
@Seeline is it you who’s from Bristol ? If so do you know much about the balloon fiesta?

Zebracat · 04/08/2025 22:46

Just packed ours off to Denmark with very few clothes but bags and bags of beauty stuff. She doesn’t wear obvious makeup and has very sensitive skin, so I have no idea what was in them. I didn’t think she had enough clothes so I took her shopping and bought sports leggings and tops and yoga stuff so she can be active but also use them to lounge. She was very pleased. She was planning to take her 1 pair of ancient joggers for all of that stuff.

ExtensivelyDecorating · 04/08/2025 22:56

Ah yes, DD has sport leggings and tops, she has been hitting the gym and classes this summer.
