Thread 54 - Summer 25 - Graduations after Uni Year 3

Oblomov25 · 20/06/2025 17:15

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

So lovely to have you back, FruitySpicedBun.
I’m so sorry your DD has had a tough time but very pleased to hear she’s on a happier path now.
(Lots of empathy as DS has also had a difficult relationship experience that involved the police).

You’ve been missed. Xx

Alwaysplayspicc · 10/07/2025 20:22

I’ve just posted a cryptic message to you on WIWIKAU, Piggywaspushed!!! Just so you know it’s me. 🤩

Seeline · 10/07/2025 21:19

@FruitedSpicybun good to hear from you. So sorry your DD has had such a rough time. I hope she continues to improve.

Cantonet · 10/07/2025 21:43

Oblomov25 · 10/07/2025 23:19

Welcome back @FruitedSpicybun. All are welcome here, you know that.

I'm sorry I'm crap with names. I miss @orangecinnamon, from the old threads. I can't keep track of who changes their name to what. You need to explain it to me, (baring privacy safety) : I am now x , I was y, else I can't track.

Good to hear from you @FruitedSpicybun. Sorry to hear about the struggles your DD has had Flowers

PhotoDad · 11/07/2025 09:50

Sorry to hear about the problems, @FruitedSpicybun.

Graduation was lovely, although the university did its best to mess things up. They lost my daughter's details, twice, after endless hours on the phone and emails. It wasn't confirmed that she would have a gown to wear until the actual morning of the ceremony! Luckily, all's well that ends well. We're now in London for that big trade-fair; she sold some artwork yesterday and handed out her contact details to dozens of people, so fingers crossed for her.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/07/2025 10:40

@FruitedSpicybun I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your DD and, by extension, you and your family. It's great to hear that she is coming out the other side of it and is now enjoying life more fully. I wish her all the best. Flowers

EwwSprouts · 11/07/2025 12:40

@FruitedSpicybun So pleased to learn your DD is in a better place after the trauma. Welcome back!

Question for those with new graduates or ones from previous years - they will lose their access to Microsoft products on their uni accounts, what have yours done instead or planning to do? DS uses word for his CVs, job applications etc, I have been getting him to copy everything over to google drive / apple icloud for now. I have found in the past that the browser versions in google aren’t great though and you can get formatting issues. We are largely an Apple family I don’t like Apple Pages and Numbers and have got into some right jumbles in the past with spreadsheets in different formats between google sheets, Numbers and Excel.

Seeline · 11/07/2025 22:12

We've always had a family Microsoft 365 subscription as I work freelance. We can have multiple devices using it at any one time. DS was able to transfer all his uni work via memory stick and it works fine now it's copied onto his machine. It gets complicated if you have logins to two different accounts so memory stick worked best.
I can't remember exactly but I think it's about £80/year.

ExtensivelyDecorating · 11/07/2025 23:18

Yes, see none of the rest of us really need it, I have three Microsoft accounts already (two jobs plus school governor) and the while thing does get complicated, I use those a bit for personal stuff but it is getting harder to actually save anything outside the various onedrives now.

I hadn't even thought about that! I think he has a lifetime one anyway.

I'm currently in NYC so can't ask him.

Not here for jollies. My mum is unwell. Currently in an airport hotel which costs £400... it's like a slightly disappointing Premier Inn room.

Piggywaspushed · 11/07/2025 23:57

I have to say one notable thing about Brum graduations are their organisation. It's a well oiled machine!

Aslockton · 12/07/2025 07:23

I am sorry to hear about your mum @Piggywaspushed . Does she live in the USA or did she become unwell on holiday? I hope she gets better soon.

ExtensivelyDecorating · 12/07/2025 07:53

Sorry about your mum @Piggywaspushed Flowers

Piggywaspushed · 12/07/2025 08:23

Yes, she lives in NYC. She's American. My whole family, apart from my dad, is here.

Seeline · 12/07/2025 08:52

Sorry about your mum @Piggywaspushed .

AnneOfCleavage · 12/07/2025 10:56

Hi @FruitedSpicybunlovely to see you back on the thread. So sorry to hear about what your DD has been going through but so happy to read she’s enjoying her education degree and made some nice friends at her new uni.

sorry to hear your mum is unwell @Piggywaspushedand so far away too. NYC must be even hotter than here so take care.
Don’t envy the players or watchers at the Wimbledon final this weekend as I struggle with the heat but obv appreciate not everyone does.

Piggywaspushed · 12/07/2025 11:05

No, it's actually about the same temperature. But everyone has air-conditioning...

EwwSprouts · 12/07/2025 11:13

@Piggywaspushed Sorry to hear your mum is poorly. I hope she is receiving excellent care.

Zebracat · 12/07/2025 12:30

Lovely to hear from the @FruitedSpicybun bun. You did a good thing, all those years ago!
complete chaos in our house with youngest son in the process of moving out and Dd hoping to leave in 3 weeks, if the visa comes. Me and Dh are a little bit giddy that we may actually get some dpace and time did ourselves shortly. The house is looking tired so we are planning a refresh. Can’t believe we will have 2 rooms available for guests.
Dd a bit put out that I told her I’m off toB&Q for boxes so her stuff can go in the loft. But she’s going for a year . We surely can’t be expected to keep her room in perpetuity ?

handmademitlove · 12/07/2025 12:58

@Zebracat My DD refused to even let people in her room when she moved to Uni (except me as the cleaner obviously!). In her mind she was only staying elsewhere temporarily. We had to negotiate adding a double bed so we could use it for visitors when she wasn't home 😁 she is autistic though and really hates change!

crazycrofter · 12/07/2025 16:26

Sorry to hear about your mum @Piggywaspushed , hope she’s better soon.

Enjoy your freedom @Zebracat !

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/07/2025 16:37

Sorry to hear about your mum @Piggywaspushed hopefully she better soon.
