Thread 54 - Summer 25 - Graduations after Uni Year 3

Oblomov25 · 20/06/2025 17:15

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Piggywaspushed · 05/07/2025 11:59

How has Liberal Arts been NCTDN ? I always think it looks fab. DS momentarily considered it. I've taught one student who went off to do it at Birmingham but no idea how she is getting on.

Seeline · 05/07/2025 12:10

Thanks @Piggywaspushed . I love all the offspring names!!

Cantonet · 05/07/2025 13:41

Hi all
I'm sorry I've dropped off this thread a bit!
Was notified by the mention.
Yes, ds1 is still at Surrey Uni doing Sports Science. He still has a year to go though, after time out due to illness. He's happy there but still hasn't found a flat for next year. They didn't realise their flat had sold until recently. ADHD ( both him n flat mate) & the art of not worrying until the very last minute !
It's lovely to hear of all the finishing updates & successes. With 2 at uni & 3 next year it all feels such a long way off here.

icanbewhatiwant · 05/07/2025 21:42

@Piggywaspushed that made me laugh. Not quite sure what I was tagged as 🤣

blinkbonny · 05/07/2025 22:44

Thanks for compiling a list, @Piggywaspushed- without wanting to give you a job of constant updates, my DS was missed Blush He is just graduating from Sociology at Nottingham (all being well, pending results due mid-month - so another one waiting @ExtensivelyDecorating).

Would take details of the driving cancellation site you used please @JustHereWithMyPopcorn (and happy belated birthday wishes to you, @EwwSprouts and @OublietteBravo). DS failed his test before A-levels and has only just got round to rebooking but all he could get was 50 miles and six months away. Hoping that can be changed.

i didn’t join the thread at the outset but have been very glad to have come across it when DS started uni. What a lovely crowd you all are Flowers

ealingwestmum · 05/07/2025 23:19

It’s so lovely to see some faces return with their updates!

Hi blink, I thought there was a sociologist! And one more for Nottingham, too.

Yes, fat fingers and an addled brain!

She’s loved it. It means she’s been able to choose quite specifically what she wants to study. It does require resilience and organisation though because she doesn’t necessarily have the same people doing the same course as her at any one point.
just hope she can find a job at the end of it because it’s so open ended rather than into a certain career.

PhotoDad · 06/07/2025 15:42

Hello all, thanks for the tag! For some reason, Mumsnet dropped off my radar and it seemed a bit difficult to catch up with everything, but here I am again. Photolass completed her degree very successfully (ARU, Illustration) with a First. We went to the amazing Degree Show a couple of weeks back, and then this week it is graduation, followed immediately by a big trade fair in London where all the new design/illustration grads in the UK have stalls, and publishers and agents do the rounds and talent-spot (who knew?) So her plans are all up in the air until she knows whether that generates any work.

I probably won't catch up much, but hope to be here a bit more again!

OublietteBravo · 06/07/2025 15:44

Thanks for the list @Piggywaspushed

DD has just realised that her degree (Bachelor of Business with Law) is abbreviated to BBL. It’s fair to say she’s not thrilled with that! I expect she’ll always write is as BBL (Hons).

Piggywaspushed · 06/07/2025 15:59

Oh , well done Photosprog!

ExtensivelyDecorating · 07/07/2025 08:31

Well done Photolass!
EDlad got up early this morning and booked another driving test. I have downloaded a cancellation app (I'm more likely to be able to respond quickly than him at work, also it's my car and so my availability also counts)

crazycrofter · 07/07/2025 09:24

Good luck with driving test booking @ExtensivelyDecorating ! Dd has managed to get a cancellation in August, but still hoping for one a bit earlier. We're all getting a bit frustrated at her lack of car... combined with needing to go back to Nottingham weekly to work at Nando's and having a steady stream of gigs in London and holidays organised, it's becoming quite a headache. Today she goes back to Notts at lunchtime for shifts today and tomorrow, she has a gig in Birmingham on Thursday and the Wireless festival in London over the weekend. She had a big row with ds last night as he felt she was becoming too entitled about expecting lifts from him! I think she's just finding it hard not having her independence; it's been a while but it's easier when she's at uni as she can walk/uber most places.

Well done to your dd @PhotoDad !

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/07/2025 12:40

@blinkbonny I have messaged you.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/07/2025 12:43

@blinkbonny I see you are waiting for Monday as well? It feels like forever!

Well done to your DD @PhotoDad !!

That does sound like hard work @crazycrofter , not so bad for us as DS (and also DD) has a somewhat quieter life, but our problem is that where we live public transport isn't always an option. He's supposed to be starting his old summer job up again next week and at least he can get to that by either bus or train. Test booked for December, really hope we'll get a cancellation sooner than that.

Oblomov25 · 07/07/2025 13:54

Good to see you Photodad. Congratulations to dd.

Just picked up ds from Notts, there and back in 5 hours, not too bad a run.

DS has had his result confirmed - 2:1. So proud. He struggled so much with science at school and here he is with a higher grade BSc than his mum with her Desmond.

Aslockton · 08/07/2025 06:21

Fantastic news @ExtensivelyDecorating and @PhotoDad . What great achievements.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/07/2025 07:00

Amazing news @ExtensivelyDecorating well done your DS!

Delphigirl · 08/07/2025 07:11

Well done to your DS @ExtensivelyDecorating and to your talented DD @PhotoDad ! So lovely to hear these happy results.
