Thread 54 - Summer 25 - Graduations after Uni Year 3

Oblomov25 · 20/06/2025 17:15

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Keep going @ExtensivelyDecorating, it's a miserable process but once done it's done.

crazycrofter · 03/07/2025 17:48

unless they lose their licence in the first two years @ealingwestmum ! 😩 Bad luck @ExtensivelyDecorating but make sure he keeps going - it took me four goes! Dd has a test booked in Coventry in Sept but she really wants one sooner and in a better location. We had some luck with the testi app last time

ealingwestmum · 03/07/2025 18:00

You know @crazycrofter, I realised after I'd posted but was too late to edit! I'm so sorry I had forgotten, and I have my fingers crossed she gets it back asap (well so long as the god apps align)!

Aslockton · 03/07/2025 18:12

@Zebracat That story was so touching. I hope you are doing ok. It is so hard losing a beloved pet.

DS got back from Europe at 10.30pm on Monday night after his epic 14 hr journey in the heat. Last night he camped at Wimbledon and is currently in row 2 (directly opposite the umpire) on Court No.1 watching Jack Draper. I was up in the Gods when I went to Wimbledon... and I had twelve 10 years to supervise! I can think of worse school trips.

@Piggywaspushed DS did Meteorology and Climate Science. So a very niche degree.

Piggywaspushed · 03/07/2025 18:14

Our graduation is Weds. Apparently going to be hot again. Joy.

So, I have a DS, now a Birmingham history graduate. Going to Sheffield to pursue a journalism master's .

Anyone else want to update? I can try to compile a list as we go along.

Piggywaspushed · 03/07/2025 18:15

Am I imagining Reading aslockton?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 03/07/2025 18:19

I have a DS who is (almost!) a graduate in Law at Nottingham and is now working in law in a trainee/paralegal role.

Aslockton · 03/07/2025 18:57

@Piggywaspushed Yes, Reading. He is now starting a graduate job as a meteorologist working with energy commodity traders. He did 2 years working for press association as an undergraduate. He wrote the weather forecasts in most of the Sunday papers each week- Sunday Times, Irish Times, Mail of Sunday, Sunday Mirror etc. It paid for the gliding!

DD is a year older and an LSE graduate.

crazycrofter · 03/07/2025 20:11

Dd is going into year 4 of an MSci Psychology at Nottingham, so still a student for another year…

Don’t worry @ealingwestmum , I used to think it was all done and dusted too 🤣

ExtensivelyDecorating · 03/07/2025 20:19

Thanks re driving. Will definitely be getting onto the cancellation apps. As well as one major he only got one minor and says one followed the other due to nerves at the beginning. But I think that shows that he is pretty good overall.

DS, about to graduate in countryside management, Cirencester. No work lined up yet apart from volunteering, unfortunately driving is required for a lot in his field. DD, A levels, firmed Royal Holloway for History.

DD’s is Wednesday too! We’ll probably see each other without realising it, Piggy!

mummyinbeds · 03/07/2025 21:02

Thanks for offering to compile a list @Piggywaspushed
DS is going into fourth and final year of Law, French and French Law at Uni of Nottingham (year 3 was in Toulouse)
DD (one year younger) is heading into third and final year of International Relations and Global Development at Aberystywth and plans to stay there for a Masters.

She appears to be recovering from malaria although her last blood test should a 17 x increase in her parasite count. She went back to school yesterday and today was in charge of cookery lessons. She's going to be a wizz at cooking in a cauldron over an open fire when she's back at Uni 🤣

Seeline · 03/07/2025 21:11

@Piggywaspushed DD is going into Y3 (final year) of her archaeology, anthropology and art history degree at UEA. Currently thinking of doing a masters in something like museum studies after that.
I have an older DS (did A levels when our lot were doing GCSEs - or not doing them....) who has just started his first grad job as a quantity surveyor.

Alwaysplayspicc · 03/07/2025 21:11

Forgot to say, DD is now a graduate in English & film from Birmingham, thanks, Piggy.
DS has just finished his first year at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

How funny!

Alwaysplayspicc · 03/07/2025 21:14

Graduating/graduate mums - are trousers ok to wear to the ceremony ? (for mums, I mean!)
Im struggling with knowing how formal/smart is expected.

Piggywaspushed · 03/07/2025 21:19

I like a frock but trousers are fine!

There was literally everything being worn at DSs last year. I think possibly dresses/skirts were the most prevalent, but only just. There were trousers, jeans, jumpsuits etc too. Similarly, there were cardigans and jackets in equal measure. And by the time you've mixed in traditional and cultural dress, I think you could get away with anything.

I think it's not as posh as a formal wedding, and anything down from that is fine.

Hope you all have lovely days.

Piggywaspushed · 03/07/2025 21:20

I think we should wear a Mumsnet corsage.

Shimy · 03/07/2025 21:36

Wishing you all a lovely graduation day. I wore a dress to ds1's but i'd comfortably wear trousers too.

ealingwestmum · 03/07/2025 21:49

Thank you for collating list @Piggywaspushed. DD is going into 4th and final year studying the catchy title of: Middle Eastern & European Language Studies (Arabic & Spanish for short :)

No current plans for master’s, hoping her 6 week’s internship with a Big 4 materialises into a job offer in August 🤞

ealingwestmum · 03/07/2025 21:49

Oops, studies at TCD. Sorry

EwwSprouts · 03/07/2025 21:55

I hope you do spot each other that would be fun.

I wore a dress yesterday (was also a big birthday for me) but there were some in trousers. What I did notice was a lack of trainers whether dress, trousers or cultural attire.

Yeah to a list. I hope some old names pop back too. DS is now a biology graduate. Starts grad scheme in food sector in Sept.

ealingwestmum · 03/07/2025 22:01

Happy belated ‘big’ birthday @EwwSprouts 🍾

OublietteBravo · 03/07/2025 22:21

DD is graduating from Exeter with a degree in Business with Law on 24 July, and has just completed her first month working as a PA. It’s her 21st birthday today. (In fact it is Big Birthday Week in the Bravo household - DH was 50 yesterday).

DS is going into his second year at Newcastle (studying chemistry).
