Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Thank you!

PhotoDad · 12/07/2024 17:39

DD is happily painting little plastic figurines for one of the complicated boardgames I and both kids enjoy, while listening to 1950s radio detective stories. DS is repainting his room with help from DW (which might be linked to his acquisition of a girlfriend). I am catching up with the dregs of work from term.

I've also just got my own end-of-second-year results for a course I've been doing, subsidised by my school, which were very pleasing. It's taken me eight years to get this far, studying at 1/4 speed. I'm going to cash the modules in for a DipHE with Distinction instead of carrying on for another four years, as I'm old and tired and would rather like my weekends back!

Piggywaspushed · 12/07/2024 18:08

Went running off to DS with the link and he said 'oh yeah , I've already done it'.

He says he got 66% overall for his second year.

crazycrofter · 12/07/2024 20:52

Well done to all the young people getting through second year successfully- even if some are a little disappointed. I’m sure they’ll all improve next year anyway. And well done @PhotoDad - very impressive!

cariadambyth · 13/07/2024 16:51

Thank @Alwaysplayspicc , that calculator was great, really useful.
Congratulations to all our young people for finishing another year whatever their results. We know they are all fab’ regardless!

EwwSprouts · 13/07/2024 17:40

Congratulations @PhotoDad Hard work juggling studying & working & family.

In good news DS has got a holiday job. In bad news it pays less than the sports coaching but he wanted a change. He's going to work in a wine bar so will be on a steep learning curve re customer service. Oh and he doesn't like wine or beer.

Oblomov24 · 13/07/2024 17:52

Well done @PhotoDad indeed!

craggyrat · 14/07/2024 08:03

Fantastic @photodad!

ealingwestmum · 14/07/2024 08:10

Great achievement Photodad, congratulations

PhotoDad · 14/07/2024 08:18

Thank you everyone!

Shimy · 14/07/2024 18:49

Well done @PhotoDad . Does this mean a promotion at school or was it simply for love of learning? either way, Congratulations!

PhotoDad · 14/07/2024 19:52

@shimy I started teaching a new subject a few years back, and I really wanted a better working knowledge of it than a short course or a standard textbook could provide. So it was partly for love of learning, and partly to help my work. I could also count it as my CPD!

Shimy · 14/07/2024 22:07

@PhotoDad That's quite commendable. Wishing you luck with your teaching with all that newly gained knowledge, lucky students.

Delphigirl · 16/07/2024 23:49

Well done @photodad!
I had DS1’s graduation today - it was really lovely and joyful and he looked handsome in his cap and gown 💕. He moves to London on Friday and starts work in 2 weeks time. No sign of rabies 👍 and has one shot to go !

craggyrat · 17/07/2024 06:02

Sounds like a lovely day @delphigirl - congrats to your DS

ealingwestmum · 17/07/2024 08:14

That’s relief Delphi, all the best to him on his move and new start down saff :)

Shimy · 17/07/2024 10:00

@Delphigirl Glad to hear your ds's graduation went so well. I remember when DS last yr, emerged from the building in his cap and gown, it was quite an emotive moment and what a relief he's got a job to go to so soon, they're like gold dust at the moment. Wishing him all the best.

DS's results come out tomorrow and we're all a bit anxious. He was unable to upload a diagram during exams and emailed his tutor with it who emailed back to say that can't accept it as it's outside of exam time. So now don't know what that means for his grade for that module.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/07/2024 11:25

Congrats to your DS @Delphigirl and good luck in his new job.

fingers crossed for your DS tomorrow @Shimy

EwwSprouts · 17/07/2024 17:10

@Delphigirl Congratulations & good luck heading into the world of work proper! Sounds a fantastic day.

Delphigirl · 17/07/2024 19:07

Thanks everyone! Fingers tightly crossed for your DS @shimy 🤞

PhotoDad · 17/07/2024 21:29

Good luck to @Delphigirl DS! and I hope that everything turned out OK, @Shimy.

Cantonet · 17/07/2024 21:39

Good luck for your ds tomorrow @Shimy🤞🏼

@Delphi I'm glad your ds is well after the bat incident & brilliant news that he already has a good job waiting for him.

Shimy · 18/07/2024 09:54

Thanks to all the well wishes. DS just logged on & they're not out yet. Ho hum. I wouldn't be worried at all if not for the fact he had a problem with one of the exams where he couldn't upload his diagram.

Is DS the last to get his results here? anyone else still waiting?
