Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Shimy · 18/07/2024 10:16

@ealingwestmum Good luck to them, hope good news. Is yours today too?

Shimy · 18/07/2024 10:45

Results out and he just scrapped in a 1st! yay!

ealingwestmum · 18/07/2024 10:54

Ah that's great Shimy! DD's had hers since May, early bird :)

crazycrofter · 18/07/2024 11:19

Well done to your ds @shimy, that's brilliant!

Shimy · 18/07/2024 11:19

I mistook your finger crossing as you were waiting too @ealingwestmum . I presume all went well with DD. It seems I'm the last here, we can breathe a sigh of relief. He's off to do his 1yr placement in Reading in September. I think there's a few of us who'll be finishing in 2026.

PhotoDad · 18/07/2024 11:21

Well done @shimy DS!!

Starting the whole UCAS process with my own DS... doesn't time fly? Might pick some of your brains about particular unis once he's got his list of five.

Shimy · 18/07/2024 11:34

@PhotoDad You're in the right place for ideas so do pick away.

Cantonet · 18/07/2024 11:44

That's absolutely brilliant news @Shimy 👏🏼

Oblomov24 · 18/07/2024 11:46

Fantastic!!!!! You don’t scrape a first, you ACHIEVE a first! Well done him 🎉🎉🎉

EwwSprouts · 18/07/2024 13:21

@Shimy Awesome first! Congratulations to him.

Seeline · 18/07/2024 13:25

Great news @Shimy !

We had DSs graduation on Tuesday - he'd gone back to his house in Bristol the week before and was really poorly. I was seriously doubting whether he'd even make it. He was far from better, but he managed to make the ceremony. He was absolutely shattered by the end of it, and wasn't up to going out with his mates afterwards. We've brought him back home to recover. He has a festival next week so hopefully better by then, and then his lease is up at the beginning of August. And he's back home for good (at least until he bothers to apply for a job...).

NCTDN · 18/07/2024 14:22

Great news from people with results !

We've had our first weekend off in ages last weekend, after a run of open days with DS. Now need to get the personal statement sorted..

mummyinbeds · 18/07/2024 14:24

Fantastic news @Shimy

Still ploughing through French adim here. It took us two hours to buy french home insurance this morning because the online signature verification wouldn't recognise a UK mobile number. I'm actually shocked that we have to insure a hall of residence tiny tiny room incase of a gas explosion but it is what it is. Visa appointment is booked and once that is sorted we can think about how to get there.

Meanwhile DD thinks she has malaria. She flies home overnight tonight so at least I can help with that tomorrow. Although she has pointed out that her GP is 5 hours away in Wales with it's stupid systems which aren't linked to NHS England 🤦 It's never simple is it.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/07/2024 14:39

Amazing news @shimy, well done your DS!!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/07/2024 14:40

Oh that's not good news @mummyinbeds I hope she's mistaken. Can you get an emergency appt for her with your GP or via 111?

crazycrofter · 18/07/2024 14:45

Oh dear @mummyinbeds , has she had to end her trip early? The Welsh/English split is really annoying. My dh has a habit of going on holiday without meds/inhalers. If we’re in England he can just order a repeat prescription on the app and get it delivered to a pharmacy near the holiday place. When we were in Wales the only option he had was to buy an inhaler at cost price, which is way more than the cost of a prescription 😩

@Seeline sorry your ds is unwell. I hope he gets his act together and applies for some jobs when he’s better though!

mummyinbeds · 18/07/2024 14:48

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn last time she possibly had malaria, the GP sent her to A&E anyway so I guess that's where I'll be tomorrow afternoon. She's already planning her next trip back to Ghana so she can't be that ill (I'm sticking to that train of thought until I pick her up from the station tomorrow)

mummyinbeds · 18/07/2024 15:41

@crazycrofter fortunately her flight was booked for tonight anyway so no change of plans.
DD gets free prescriptions in Wales which is great. However, she should be exempt in England due to the medication she takes permanently but she doesn't have the certificate because she was under 19 when she left. I'm not sure how we navigate that one.

Shimy · 18/07/2024 15:51

Thanks to everyone. I wasn't expecting quite so many congratulations, DS has just got his end of 2nd year results not final degree results in case anyone was mistaken Blush.

Seeline · 18/07/2024 21:01

Hope 111 comes up trumps @mummyinbeds . Managed to get a GP appointment through 111 for DS whose medical records still had him in his 1st year halls 🙄 ABs for a chest infection anyway.

mummyinbeds · 19/07/2024 16:11

@Seeline she's been asleep since she got home at 9.15am - seemingly just ahead of airport and rail chaos. She seemed okay but I'm sure the symptoms will reappear when I ask her to unpack the suitcase which is blocking the hallway. Hopefully NHS IT systems will be working if we need them.
Hope your DS is responding to the antibiotics
