Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

A flurry of activity on here today!
Pleased to hear most have passed their end of year. Fingers crossed for the resits for young @Oblomov24 Unlucky when he had such a fab summer lined up.

The Ben Shepherd opportunity sounds very exciting. Hopes he secures the post @Piggywaspushed

DS's second year, like others, contributes 30% to the final degree grade. He wants to pull himself up too.

ealingwestmum · 09/07/2024 22:23

DD’s degree classification is based on 30% Y3 (year abroad min 60 ECTs) and 70% Y4 plus the passing of moderated language components. Her Granada semester will be taught 100% in Spanish.

Shimy · 09/07/2024 22:35

DS's results aren't out yet, due on the 18th and haven't really thought much about them but this thread is making me slightly anxious now. He did say one of his exams wasn't good. Hoping he gets an overall good grade.

ealingwestmum · 09/07/2024 22:42

I’m sorry to hear the challenges for the Nottingham crew. 🤞 on the resits for those having to take.

Cantonet · 09/07/2024 22:49

Thank you for your wise advice@Delphigirl.
@Oblomov24 oh no !
Ds is meant to have had his uni results by now, but he swears he hasn't got them yet. Dd has had her hand op. cancelled for tomorrow & is very disappointed.
Brilliant news with all the positive results.

mummyinbeds · 09/07/2024 22:55

Sorry to hear young @Oblomov24 has the dreaded resits. DS's was the third week of August last year and the results came out the day before he went back for year 2. It was a tense time.
I have no idea how much year 2 counts towards DS's degree. Back in the day of my joint honours, law was 50:50 and politics was 100% final year. Being examined on stuff I may or may not have studied three years earlier was not fun.

ealingwestmum · 09/07/2024 23:32

I'm sorry to hear that Cantonet, I hope it gets rescheduled for her quickly; it's the timing challenge I guess, the summer break giving her longer to recover before going back?

craggyrat · 10/07/2024 06:44

Sorry to hear about cancellation of op @cantonet. That is so disappointing when it happens. And also about your DS @Oblomov24. Those exams sound so tough.

Second year also 30% for DS. Final year will be dissertation plus exams plus extended essay I think. He isn't sure yet about doing a Masters. He's got his next RAF interview end July and is doing a month remote internship for magic circle law firm but he doesn't want to do law now allegedly. His cleaning job at Yorkshire Show has nearly broken him this week! V hard physically

Piggywaspushed · 10/07/2024 06:55

I'm very unfamiliar with all these equations and weightings. York was always totally modular and every module, bar one or two introductory ones, was worth the same. I don't know if they still do this. It seems a shame for some that first year is worth nothing.

BlueMarigold · 10/07/2024 07:07

DD has gone on her first holiday abroad with her uni friends.

craggyrat · 10/07/2024 07:19

@BlueMarigold - hope she has a great time!

@piggywaspushed good luck to your DS for the BS mentoring

Heifer · 10/07/2024 08:51

Really sorry @Oblomov24 . Such a shame when assume he was having a great time at Camp America. When does he come home?

@Piggywaspushed I haven't seen any comments about 1st year results counting towards final grades so guessing most don't these days?

@BlueMarigold hope she has a fantastic time away. Hope you're not worrying 😀

DD seemed less upset last night and just said she has made it very difficult for next year. But that's a lot better from her initial reaction. She has now messaged the swimming teacher to see if she can get onto working at the holiday camps here.

Heifer · 10/07/2024 08:54

@Piggywaspushed sounds like your DS is doing really well in Birmingham. Fingers crossed for the mentoring with Ben Shepherd 🤞

PhotoDad · 10/07/2024 08:57

Sorry for the resit and change of plans, @Oblomov24.

At DD's place (Anglia Ruskin) the first year doesn't count. The best 50% of the Year 2 modules are combined with all of the Year 3 modules for final grade. (I am also a dinosaur whose entire degree was based on eight exams at the end of Year 3.)

Seeline · 10/07/2024 09:05

Wow - lots to catch up on! Congratulations to those who have passed and commiserations to those with resits.

We got back from our holiday and promptly all went down with a nasty bug - possibly covid but didn't have any tests. It's over a week now, and I'm still far from better.

DS returned to Bristol yesterday for a final 3weeks in his y4 house. He has been home a month, hasn't started in his driving theory, or booked any lessons. He hasn't applied for a single job. Having him home is difficult - he is still on student hours, so rarely appears until lunchtime,. His plans change regularly and at short notice so he can be home for dinner one minute and then actually out the next. Makes catering very difficult. I just haven't got the space for him to be buying his own food and catering for himself. And I can't face coming down each morning to find the chaos of a meal he cooked at 2 am just left abandoned. To be honest, I'm rather dreading him coming home full time 🙁. Have any of you got older ones who are back living at home once they've graduated? I could do with some tips 😁

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/07/2024 10:36

I missed you post yesterday @Oblomov24 I'm sorry the Notts tight markers have struck again. Fingers crossed for your DS in his resits, as @mummyinbeds said, ours were in third week of August and they took forever to get the grades back which was to do with the marking boycott I think. Sorry about camp America, how disappointing for him. 😔

@Piggywaspushed sounds like a fab opportunity for your DS!

@Cantonet poor DD, hope the op is rescheduled quickly.

@BlueMarigold hope your DD has fun on her holiday!

@Seeline Sending you patience and strength, no wise words of wisdom from me, DS is also driving me crazy after being home just a few weeks!

Oblomov24 · 10/07/2024 15:19

Thanks All. He'll be home tomorrow. ✈️

Better to fail in year 2 than 3 - to be glass half full. Some may remember that DS failed a year three module. That was extremely stressful.

Alwaysplayspicc · 12/07/2024 12:17

Commiserations, Oblimov. A real shame about having to miss Camp America. I hope he can smash his resits.

DD worked out she passed year 2 with 59.3, with results ranging from 53 to 67.
She's part relieved, part disappointed, as she really wants a solid 2:1 next year and knows she has to keep her average higher if she's to succeed.
I think she said year 2 was worth 25% of the degree ( Birmingham).
Piggy, she used some kind of weighting calculator online to work out her actual grade, rather than just the average.

Cantonet · 12/07/2024 12:22

Ds1 also passed this year to my great relief. This year's marks don't contribute at all to his degree classification.
Dd2 has an extension to complete a couple of modules. She appears to have run out of steam at the moment. She came back from London looking absolutely grey & exhausted.

You don't have a link do you always?

Comefromaway · 12/07/2024 13:07

Ds says he hasn't had his final Yea 1 confirmation but he has passed all his assignments/assesments. Mostly marks in the 50's apart from his recital which was 70's. One essay at 45 (lost 10% of marks due to it being a day late).

mummyinbeds · 12/07/2024 14:31

So, there I was thinking a French visa application couldn't be any more complicated than a Ghanaian one. Boy was I wrong. Has anyone been through this and have any advice to offer?
DS had a zoom welcome meeting with French uni yesterday which talked about the billion forms he has to complete and hand deliver to various places, with various official stamps and signatures. The French obviously don't have ADHD (although DS does know how to say it in French🤣)
He also has his accomodation offer - a 9m² box, which includes the ensuite and a kitchenette. It's tiny and at a different uni to the one he's attending. There is a pretty good and cheap metro system but its all adding to the stress. He emailed to ask if there was anything closer and was told 'no' (typed in a french accent for affect)
And then there's to small matter of getting him to Southwest France. If it was DD I'd wave her off at the airport with a suitcase. I think I'll have to go with DS (not complaining, it's the southwest of France in August 😎)

Shimy · 12/07/2024 15:07

@Oblomov24 Missed you post but oh that is just crappiest news! your poor ds having missing out on Camp America. I wish him all the very best with his resit. What doesn't break you makes you stronger in his case, wishing him renewed strength and determination.

@Alwaysplayspicc Well done to your DD, 2nd yr I think has been tough for most.

@Cantonet Hope your DD has time to recover her strength before she dives into her mules. They do wear themselves out sometimes trying to pack in so much at once. I remember that feeling infact still get it except the body doesn't corporate with the brain these days. Well done to DS1.

@Comefromaway Well done to DS.

@mummyinbeds That is an unbelievably small room never mind what they've managed to pack in it and I can't get my head around accommodation that's in a different university to the one he's at? I hope he manages to sort out all the forms and hoping it will be a lovely 'adventure' for him and all turn out right in the end. I think it's a good idea you go with him.

Comefromaway · 12/07/2024 15:24

I don't think I mentioned that ds has secured a Christmas job playing in a professional panto. So he may not be home for christmas as the trains won't get him back for the boxing dfay matinee.
