Thread 50 - Covid GCSE Cohort - New Year of Adulting

984 replies

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:48

2024 here we are... our young people are still getting used to adulting and we're still doing that adulting thing ...it's tough !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Well done Seeline dd.

EwwSprouts · 04/05/2024 10:06

@Seeline Super update.

crazycrofter · 04/05/2024 12:32

That's amazing @Seeline - well done to your dd!

ealingwestmum · 04/05/2024 12:57

It's so lovely to hear she's been to recognised for her efforts Seeline, great update.

Shimy · 04/05/2024 13:16

Oh my! @Seeline How amazing is your DD?, big Congratulations are in order.
What does it mean for her, apart from how super proud and confident she must be feeling does she get some tangible benefits with her award? that is bound to look fantastic on her CV!

BlueMarigold · 04/05/2024 14:16

Great news @Seeline! Really lovely update

Seeline · 04/05/2024 14:31

Thanks everyone - really chuffed for her.

@Shimy I don't think so. She was happy with a free meal 😁

NCTDN · 04/05/2024 16:39

That's lovely @Seeline

I think it's interesting to read this article. www.whatuni.com/student-awards-winners/wusca-rankings/student-support/ Nottingham isn't mentioned at all. To be fair, most mentioned are the much smaller places but Sheffield comes out of this really well. I don't think anyone on here has children there do they?

Cantonet · 04/05/2024 17:46

Mine has an offer there @NCTDN for Psychology.
I loved it when we looked around. It seemed very warm, nurturing and down to earth. DS was a bit more circumspect 😄
The halls were in a very green & a 'nice' area. Plus there was a very active Psychology society. My brother & sister did law there many moons ago & were very happy.

Cantonet · 04/05/2024 17:47

@Seeline what lovely news!

Monkey2001 · 04/05/2024 21:08

@Seeline how wonderful to see her thriving after the blip last year. Well done her!

mummyinbeds · 04/05/2024 22:14

Well done @Seeline DD

I've just read this back and realised I might have died like I was criticising Nottingham. I'm not.

Decorhate · 06/05/2024 07:57

Hi all. I haven’t posted for ages….

@NCTDN Re engineering - Nottingham is very popular in general with kids in my area (both unis). However when we went to the open day for ds1 (pre Covid) we were all underwhelmed with the Civil Engineering Department presentation. Also, Ds wanted a campus uni but there was something about the layout at Notts that did not appeal, too spread out maybe?

So he went for Sheffield as his insurance which was not campus at all!

Lots of people love it though!

It was lucky we had visited Sheffield as that was where Ds2 (this thread’s year) ended up going and we had not obviously done any open days for him due to Covid. He’s doing Economics & Politics though, not engineering.

I think he likes it there though perhaps still has some lingering disappointment that he did not get into Leeds. He has somehow managed to sort out quite a good company for his placement year so will be back home next year.

NCTDN · 06/05/2024 08:18

@Decorhate where is ds1 then?

Decorhate · 06/05/2024 08:40

@NCTDN He’s at Bath. Final year. And loves the West Country so much he is staying there for work afterwards

Shimy · 06/05/2024 13:09

Sorry to bring down the happy tone of the thread but I came on here as I'm sure I've seen before some i think have slightly strained relationships with DM's? a relative just disclosed something to me about DM which i find horrifying and just can't place it anywhere in my head. Our relationship has been non existent for a while but NEVER did I dream of this. I just feel i need to actually 'talk' about it to someone anonymously to stop it whirling round in my head, I've been talking up and down since i heard and feel like I'm going a bit loopy. In case anyone wondering why i didn't just go and start a new thread, I just want level-headed people and not the nut jobs that pile in elsewhere on MN.

Oblomov24 · 06/05/2024 13:12

@Shimy
Tell us as much as you want to. And we will all try and help. Even offloading it a bit ,might just help to stop the feelings of going cuckoo.

EffortlessDistraction · 06/05/2024 13:15

Oh @Shimy I'm sorry, what a shock yes, this is a better place to offload than wider MN. We are here for you Flowers

Zebracat · 06/05/2024 13:24

Shimy, tell us about it, much better here than anywhere else. Ive seen abused women told it’s all their fault out there. I think there are trolls who hate MN so try to make it a bad place. I know I have.

@shimy - I am so sorry. I truly have no words. I hope you and your cousin (who sounds amazing) can continue to support each other 💐

Decorhate · 06/05/2024 13:51

Shimy, it must have been such a shock to hear this (or was it? were you ever treated like this?)

Even allowing for the beating of children to have been quite common in my childhood, it seems pretty vicious.

I hope your cousin had people to care for her and help her get over this.
