Thread 50 - Covid GCSE Cohort - New Year of Adulting

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:48

2024 here we are... our young people are still getting used to adulting and we're still doing that adulting thing ...it's tough !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Oh @Oblomov24 🤦‍♀️. Once DD and I decided to go to see Annie, starring Craig Revel Horwood as Miss Hannigan as we are Strictly fans and though he'd be great in the role. Didn't read the small print which said CRH was not playing the role on Saturdays (it was December so obviously he was doing Strictly 🤦‍♀️). Guess what day I booked. We went anyway, Lesley Joseph played the part and was brilliant but I did feel so silly.

I would love to see the anniversary tour of Les miserables with Michael ball and Alfie boe but it's not clear which shows they're in. I'd be gutted if I got tickets and it wasn't them.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/02/2024 08:06

@Oblomov24 if it’s any consolation my friend went to the Ralph Fiennes one, the week before we were due to go, and was unimpressed with the whole set up which was poorly managed and very late to start so she almost missed her train home, she also said that RF was really hammy and the witches were like drama students. 😬

I hope one of your friends is very small and young looking for The Importance of Being Earnest 😉 I also love that play, we did it for O level back in the dark ages.

On the Les mis tour website if you go to the cast listing and click on the names it says which performances they're scheduled for if that helps? Obviously things can change but I suspect they'll be trying their best not to as lots of people would feel similar!

NCTDN · 29/02/2024 08:28

Ooh that's good to know. Thanks

NCTDN · 29/02/2024 08:32

...except they're all sold out SadSadSad

DontCallMeBaby · 29/02/2024 08:56

I got through A level and degree English without seeing an actual Shakespeare play, and have still only seen a handful. Thoroughly enjoyed them all though. Macbeth twice, once with Sean Bean. Second was for DD’s GCSE, audience being split between ‘normal people’ and school groups. The knob gag got a laugh from the school kids which I thought was quite an achievement (yes there is a knob gag in Macbeth).

Their other play was Blood Brothers, would have loved to have taken her to that but didn’t get round to it. She had no real interest in any of it, which was sad for me as word nerd, insisting on reading the poetry compilation 😂

@Oblomov24 if your friends aren’t remarkable youthful in appearance can you upgrade to adult tickets? A seat’s a seat after all.

Oblomov24 · 29/02/2024 11:27

Popcorn and Don'tCallMe, nope, none of us can pass for 16. Rather than booking 'Importance of being Earnest' child seats, us 3 mid 50's old hags are more suited to the role of the 3 witches in Macbeth! Wink

I thought you all might enjoy a post I've just made on the Year 10 thread.

Have to tell you about the utter bodge I've made. What a twat!

What texts /books are your dc studying for English? (This is for year 10, so 1st year of GCSE's - it wasn't that along ago that we were all in that very position!!)

Ds2 is doing 'Macbeth' and 'An Inspector calls'. I get an email from school that they have limited number of tickets for London Macbeth, starring Ralph Fiennes. Thinking he wouldn't get tickets I checked out prices, asked a couple of other mums, told ds2 to ask his closest friends. So angry with myself I left it so late, the tickets get sold out, not £30, not £85, some £108, some £260+.

I've got 6 tabs open. I'm looking at all places that have Macbeth. David Tennent is no longer doing it. My friend says her dd saw it in Guildford last week but that's now finished. Bugger. I'm looking at Fiennes Macbeth in London, Macbeth in Guildford expired, Brighton, Farnham and finally found one in Wimbledon so booked that for £22.50 each. Result.

I also had inspector calls 3 screens open, looking for that aswell. finally found one in London that I'll book tonight.

And I'm buzzing around, flitting between tabs, trying to do too many things .... accidentally had 'the importance of being earnest' open. And then accidentally booked it by accident, what I thought I was booking 'An inspector calls'. What a twat. Non refundable. So decide to go with 2 friends. Do you think they'll notice that I booked 2 tickets for 2 x under 16's, and 1 adult? Angry? Because I've spent £77 by accident!

I did study Inspector Calls myself at school and love it. "A handbag"? But I am so cross I accidentally booked them.

You can all laugh!

Anyone else done anything as stupid

Me!!!
I was desperately trying to book Gary Barlow tickets some years ago on my Kindle.
Finally got to the top of the queue (I thought), clicked "but now", paid for 4 tickets...only to realize the screen had jumped and I had tickets to see Peter Andre instead!

Tried everything to sell them, but ended up making a loss on EBay.

Oblomov and her witches.

😂

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/02/2024 15:48

@Alwaysplayspicc OMG the disappointment and horror must have been HUGE! 😂😂

Shimy · 29/02/2024 18:31

Tickets to Peter Andre has made my day 😂 is he even still in the business? my lasting memory of him is him singing 'Beauty & the Beast', with Katie Grin.

crazycrofter · 29/02/2024 19:47

🤣 Peter Andre! I don’t think I could sit through an hour of him even if you gave me free tickets!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/02/2024 15:48

@Alwaysplayspicc OMG the disappointment and horror must have been HUGE! 😂😂

It was! One second I was elated I'd got tickets for Mr Barlow...the next, I was horrified and hysterical and desperately jabbing at the keyboard, trying to cancel the purchase!!

I wouldn't have gone, even if I hadn't been able to sell them/ give them away!

Oblomov24 · 01/03/2024 05:15

Piccolo and Peter Andre Grin

cariadambyth · 01/03/2024 07:15

I’ve woken this morning still chuckling about Peter Andre!

craggyrat · 01/03/2024 08:24

I laughed out loud at Peter Andre!

Alwaysplayspicc · 01/03/2024 09:35

I'm glad I made you all chuckle. 😀
I was going to say you couldn't pay me to see him, but it's dawned on me that I ended up paying NOT to see him! 😂😂
(No offence, Peter, I'm sure you're very nice...)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 01/03/2024 10:42

I'm laughing all over again this morning @Alwaysplayspicc 😂

We have a little bit of positive news, DS has finally got himself a job! he's applied to 30+ places but nothing doing and has finally landed one. It's only a three month one but that should get him to the summer at least. Hooray!

crazycrofter · 01/03/2024 11:14

Well done to ds @JustHereWithMyPopcorn ! Is it in Nottingham? Dd also applied for dozens of jobs, possibly hundreds and it took her four months to get one. It's perfect for her though, being a caring job. She's just doing her first shadowing sessions and had great feedback from the 'clients'.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 01/03/2024 11:16

Yes, in Nottingham. All the boys in his house have been trying too, he's the first of them to actually be offered something. Sounds like your DD is doing really well and enjoying it which is fantastic. I'm not sure DS will 'enjoy' this job but he will have to grin and bear it because he needs the money! 😂

craggyrat · 01/03/2024 11:40

Great news re job @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

ealingwestmum · 01/03/2024 11:53

Great news JustHere. And to your daughter Crazy, not many can do such a challenging job and enjoy it like she is, a real credit to you.
